A coin flip will decide the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament
Mar 03, 2025 at 05:10 am
Through sixteen conference games, the top two seeds remained tied atop the standings in the SEC. That means a coin will now decide who is No. 1

The top two seeds in the SEC remained tied heading into the conference tournament. This means that a coin flip will now decide who is No. 1.
With their respective wins on Sunday, South Carolina and Texas tied for the top seed in the Southeastern Conference at 15-1.
This comes after the Longhorns defeated Florida, 72-46, on the road while the Gamecocks took care of No. 15 Kentucky, 78-66, at home.
This had the Longhorns moving to 29-2 overall to end the year while the Gamecocks finished the regular season at 27-3.
As for the tiebreaker, there is no way to break a tie between the two going into the postseason.
However, Greg Sankey will now have to flip a coin at the league’s office later today to decide which team will be No. 1.
Sankey will be doing so live at halftime of Ole Miss vs. LSU, which should be within the next hour or so, on the SEC Network.

This is the third and final method of a tiebreaker for the conference’s top seed. Head-to-head record is the first but the two split their season series with South Carolina winning 67-50 in Columbia on January 12th before Texas won 66-62 about a month later on February 9th in Austin. The second is then their records against their highest-ranked common opponents in the league but, again, since they only lost to one another, that wouldn’t apply either.
That’s where the coin comes into play for the Gamecocks and the Longhorns.
