Coin enthusiasts are going wild over a 50p piece deemed as the most sought-after in circulation

A 50p coin, featuring Sir Isaac Newton, could be worth more than just pocket change, according to a TikTok user.

The coin was first released in 2017 and is still in circulation today. However, some of these coins may contain an error that makes them even more valuable.

In a video posted on TikTok, the user, who goes by the handle @CoinCollectingWizard, explains what to look for if you want to find the valuable error coin.

"This 50p could have an error making it valuable. The Sir Isaac Newton 50p is one of the most popular 50p's in circulation, shortly after it was issued in 2017," the user says in the video.

"What you are looking for is for the obverse to have several extra lines across Queen Elizabeth's portrait. If your coin has these lines, then congratulations you have found it."

The user goes on to explain that the extra lines are not grooves that have been scratched into the surface of the coin. Instead, they are whiskers that stand slightly proud of the surface.

"This is thought to be an error caused during the striking process, a result of what is known as a dye clash," the user adds.

"Interestingly, the extra lines aren't grooves scratched into the surface of the coin. But rather whiskers standing slightly proud of the surface."

It is not known for sure how many of these error coins are in circulation, but they are thought to be extremely rare. Some of these coins have even been listed on the secondary market for more than 100 times face value.

If you believe you have a rare coin in your possession, there are several steps you should take. First and foremost, seek a professional valuation.

This could be based on its rarity, condition, and historical significance. You can obtain a free valuation from an expert, such as the Royal Mint.

Additionally, researching the coin can provide valuable insights into its rarity, history, and potential value. There are numerous resources available, including books, websites, and guides, to help you learn more about your coin.
