Circle Teams Up With Sony Block Solutions to Make USDC the Primary Transaction Token on the Soneium Blockchain

Cryptocurrency exchange Circle has partnered with Sony Block Solutions to integrate USD Coin (USDC) as the primary transaction token on the Soneium blockchain.

The collaboration will enable users and creators to conduct secure and borderless transactions, ultimately aiming to foster a more connected and decentralized global economy.

Announced Monday, the partnership will see bridged USDC, a version of the stablecoin transferred from its original Ethereum blockchain to Soneium, used for transactions on the platform.

The process involves locking USDC on Ethereum and minting an equivalent amount on the new blockchain, enabling users to move their USDC holdings between the two chains.

“This collaboration aligns ideally with our vision of creating a more interconnected and efficient digital ecosystem,” said Jun Watanabe, Chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs.

Set to launch its mainnet in 2025, Soneium is currently in its testing phase. The platform integrates blockchain technology into Sony’s entertainment services to revolutionize content creation, distribution, and fan engagement.

This could include NFTs, digital rights management, and other use cases. For developers, Soneium will offer the tools to create decentralized apps (dApps) using Sony’s infrastructure, opening up new possibilities for decentralized services linked to Sony’s products.

The partnership marks a significant step toward a decentralized digital future, with both companies aiming to deliver real-world benefits for users worldwide.

“We're excited to work with Sony Block Solutions to integrate USDC into the Soneium blockchain and contribute to the development of the next generation of Web3 entertainment experiences,” said Circle.
