Circle, Coinbase, and the Stablecoin Bill: A New York Minute on Crypto's Future

Jun 22, 2025 at 01:00 am

The GENIUS Act has crypto markets buzzing, especially for Circle and Coinbase. But is this stablecoin bill a game-changer or just another Wall Street power play?

Circle, Coinbase, and the Stablecoin Bill: A New York Minute on Crypto's Future

Hold onto your hats, folks! The crypto world's been spinning faster than a New York taxi meter, all thanks to the GENIUS Act and its potential to regulate stablecoins. Circle and Coinbase are riding high, but let's see what's really cookin'.

The GENIUS Act: A Win for Circle and Coinbase?

The U.S. Senate passed the GENIUS Act, aiming to bring some order to the stablecoin market. This legislative win sent Circle and Coinbase stocks soaring, signaling investor confidence in the regulatory path for digital asset firms. Circle's stock jumped significantly, and Coinbase also saw a substantial rise. The market is buzzing, but what does it all mean?

Chamath's Take: IPOs vs. SPACs

Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya pointed out that Circle employees missed out on major gains by going the traditional IPO route instead of a SPAC merger. He estimates they lost nearly $3 billion because they had to sell a chunk of their shares during the IPO. Chamath prefers SPACs because he says value transfer is disclosed upfront, unlike the opaqueness of traditional IPOs where banks reward their best customers.

Are Circle and Coinbase Still Good Buys?

The GENIUS Act's bipartisan advancement through the Senate has provided added tailwinds to the crypto stock rally. Trump has signaled his intent to sign the bill. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claims that the stablecoin market capitalization could reach $3.7 trillion by the end of the decade following the passage of the GENIUS Act, which is 15x larger than the sector’s current valuation.

While Circle has emerged as an excellent stablecoin play, sidelined investors should avoid FOMO buying at current levels. The stock’s explosive rally has been fueled largely by speculative 0DTE flows and sky-high implied volatility, rather than fundamentals.

Coinbase is also another excellent stablecoin play, especially considering Coinbase has a minority stake in the company. In addition to that equity exposure, Coinbase earns 50% of the interest income generated from USDC reserves, making it a direct beneficiary of USDC’s growth. Coinbase has received the MiCA license from Luxembourg to provide crypto services in the EU.

The Controversy: Who Really Benefits?

Not everyone's popping champagne. Some critics argue the GENIUS Act could favor the politically connected, potentially benefiting projects linked to the Trump family or other well-connected actors. The concern is that this framework might cement advantages for centralized players while leaving smaller, decentralized projects in the dust. Is this a fair playing field or just another Wall Street power play?

Final Thoughts: Cautious Optimism

The GENIUS Act could be a landmark moment for stablecoins, but it's not a done deal yet. The House still needs to approve it, and the market could cool down if momentum fades. Keep an eye on government-led pilots or institutional partnerships – they could spark another rally. But for now, approach with caution, and remember, in the world of crypto, anything can happen!

So, is the GENIUS Act a golden ticket for Circle and Coinbase? Maybe. But as any New Yorker knows, you gotta keep your eyes open and your wits about you. The crypto game is always changing, and we're just along for the ride. Buckle up!
