CHECK your change because you could be in possession of a penny worth much more than its face value

If your one-cent coin has a key detail in its top left, it could be worth hundreds of dollars. Bills and coins with errors are often highly collectible

Coin collectors, it's time to get excited! If you've been searching for a way to add some extra value to your spare change, then you're in luck.

Coin expert Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) has over 4.7 million TikTok followers and shares examples of such currency to watch for.

In a video last week, he explained why one penny is rare and worth significantly more than its one-cent face value.

"A brand new 2024 penny error was just found and it's the most expensive one yet," said Miller.

"Being early on something brand new like this is important."

The initial discovery of a coin error can lead to a higher selling price.

Early findings are often seen as more valuable because they are rare and in high demand among collectors.

One such penny had already sold for over $200, Miller noted.

He advised his followers to look out for 2024 pennies and check the top left of the coins for a "retained cut die break" error.

Such an error occurs when a piece of the die used to strike coins cracks or breaks but remains in place, continuing to strike coins for a short period before completely falling away.

Coins struck during this period will show a raised area or anomaly where the break is located.

Miller showed an example of a penny with a retained cut die break that sold for $203 with 16 bids.

"If you're watching this, you're pretty much the only people that know about it," he said of the new error.

Another 2024 penny error that is already well-known was also shared by the coin expert.

He advised his viewers to look towards the bottom of the penny where it says "VDB" on the obverse, just below Lincoln's shoulder.

The letters stand for Victor David Brenner, the designer of the Lincoln cent.

If the three tiny letters were missing, your 2024 penny could be worth over $50, Miller noted.

He showed examples of such coins, including one that sold for $51 and another that sold for $58. Both were recently purchased in May this year.

"Every 2024 penny you come across - make sure you check for these [errors]," said the expert.

Another rare detail on a Lincoln penny makes it worth $26,000.
