Chaching! Royal Mint's Rare £2 Coins (and £1s!) That Could Be Hiding in Your Pocket

Aug 02, 2025 at 05:43 pm

Uncover the secrets of Royal Mint's rare £2 coins and even some £1 coins! From First World War commemoratives to error coins, your spare change might be worth a fortune.

Chaching! Royal Mint's Rare £2 Coins (and £1s!) That Could Be Hiding in Your Pocket

Ever feel like your spare change is just… spare? Think again! The world of Royal Mint coins, especially those rare £2 coins, is heating up, and you might be sitting on a goldmine (or, well, a pound mine) without even knowing it.

The Royal Mint's Hidden Treasures

The Royal Mint isn't just about churning out everyday currency. They're also behind some seriously collectible coins, and the rarest £2 coins are a prime example. Keep an eye out for commemorative coins, especially those from the 2002 Commonwealth Games. These could be worth more than you think! It all started back in 1986 when the first commemorative UK £2 coin was struck for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, marking the first time a sporting event was commemorated on UK coinage.

The Lord Kitchener £2 Coin: Error is Your Friend

Here's where things get interesting. Released in 2014 to mark 100 years since the start of World War I, the Lord Kitchener £2 coin is already a notable piece. But if you happen to find one where the words “Two Pounds” are missing on the head side? Bingo! You've got an error coin. Coin Hunter experts estimate that 5,720,000 of these coins are still in circulation. The first one sold for £500 back in March 2020, so happy hunting!

Don't Forget the £1 Coins!

While we're on the topic of valuable pocket change, let's not forget the humble £1 coin. According to TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, there are a few rare £1 coins you should be on the lookout for. A new pound coin from 2016 with a small floral symbol at the bottom left is rare, with only 9,850 minted. Also, an old round pound coin from 2016 with the shield design, only 38,000 of these coins were minted making it rare and worth around £30 to collectors. But the real jackpot? Some 2016 coins were minted with the wrong engraving of 2017, and these have been known to sell for £500!

Where to Sell Your Finds

So, you've checked your change and found a potential treasure. What's next? eBay is a great place to start, or you can head to your local coin shop or antiques dealer. There are also plenty of Facebook coin groups where collectors are buying and selling. Just be sure to do your research and get a fair price.

Happy Hunting!

Who knew your spare change could be so exciting? So next time you're emptying your pockets, take a closer look. You might just find a Royal Mint treasure that turns your spare change into a serious payday. Happy hunting, coin enthusiasts!
