Centralized Crypto Exchanges Record-Breaking Q1 Trading Surge
May 02, 2024 at 05:00 pm
In Q1 2024, crypto trading surged, reaching levels seen in November 2021. Centralized exchanges played a significant role, with the top 10 platforms handling $2.3 trillion in volume, Binance emerging as the market leader with a 49.7% market share ($1,142.5 billion in transactions). Upbit and Bybit followed with 9.4% and 8.2% market shares, respectively.

Centralized Crypto Exchanges Post Record-Breaking Trading Volume in Q1 2024
The cryptocurrency trading landscape has experienced a significant upswing in recent months, with centralized exchanges playing a pivotal role in facilitating this surge in activity. CoinGecko, a leading crypto data provider, released an in-depth report revealing that the top ten centralized exchanges generated an astounding $2.3 trillion in trading volume during the first quarter of 2024. This figure is comparable to the peak reached in November 2021, underscoring the persistent significance of centralized platforms within the crypto industry.
Binance's Resurgence and Market Dominance
Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by market capitalization, asserted its dominance in March 2024 by capturing nearly half of the market share at 49.7%. The platform processed a record-breaking $1,142.5 billion in trading volume, a staggering 131.6% increase compared to February 2024. This resurgence marks a remarkable recovery for Binance, which faced regulatory challenges in 2023.
Upbit and Bybit Climb the Ranks
Upbit emerged as the second largest exchange in March 2024, with a 9.4% market share and a trading volume of $216.4 billion. This represented an impressive 181.6% growth compared to February 2024, demonstrating the exchange's ability to capitalize on strong local demand for crypto assets.
Bybit, known for its derivatives trading services, solidified its position as the third largest exchange with an 8.2% market share. The platform facilitated $189.0 billion in cryptocurrency transactions by the end of the month. Together, Binance, Upbit, and Bybit collectively controlled over 32.7% of the market share, leaving smaller competitors with less than 8% each.
Binance's Continued Market Leadership
Binance's resurgence in Q1 2024 was particularly noteworthy, as it reclaimed its market leader status with a 48.5% share of total spot trading volume. Despite regulatory headwinds in 2023, Binance's trading volumes surged, buoyed by a series of new listings and project launches.
Upbit maintained its position as the second-largest exchange, although its market share declined slightly amidst Binance's resurgence. Nevertheless, Upbit's strong local presence and new token listings contributed to its growth in trading volumes.
Bybit's rise to the top three demonstrated its rapid expansion, with a quarterly trading volume increase of 111.8%. This surge displaced OKX, the previous third-ranked exchange, further solidifying Bybit's position among the leading cryptocurrency platforms.
Binance's dominance was further cemented by its performance in Q1 2024, far surpassing its competitors. Five of the top ten exchanges saw their volumes increase by over 100%, while Bitget, Bybit, KuCoin, and Coinbase also posted strong gains, but none could match Binance's meteoric ascent.
