This 25-Cent Coin Can Fetch in Auction up to $20000 Thanks to Its Specific Markings

A well known fact in the numismatic world is that the value of a coin is subjective and not always what is stamped on its front. For most of us, currency really does show its value, but the select few that are lucky enough to own or find a rare specimen of a coin, generally not in circulation, as those get snapped up fairly quickly, can often turn a profit even with pieces of a very low denomination.
For example, there is a 25 cent coin which can fetch in auction up to $20,000 thanks to its specific markings that make it unique enough to be of value to collectors. The trick with this types of coins is that knowing how to identify them and how to know if the condition that they are in is good enough to fetch maximum value. For most of them even a mediocre condition can up the value of the piece, but the better the condition, the more a serious collector will pay to add it to their collection.
The specific 25 cent coin that we have mentioned is a collectible 25-cent coins produced by the US Mint in 1976 in honor of the country’s bicentennial. The special nature of the production means that the coin has an innate value that exceeds its denomination, but in the case of this coin, there is an additional anomaly that adds to its value. The US Mint has production center or Minting centers in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, each one with distinctive markings to prove provenance. These coins usually have multiple layers of metal, including nickel, copper and zinc, but in the case of the U.S. Bicentennial quarters, the San Fracisco Mint made a special edition of these coins and coated them in 40% silver, adding exponentially to the value.
We do not know how much a regular U.S. Bicentennial quarter coin could be sold for, it would depend on the state of the piece, the provenance paperwork and the circumstances of the sale, but it would most certainly be more than 25 cents. But we do have the auction data from the 1976-S bicentennial silver quarter, with is the special name these U.S. Bicentennial quarters received if they were minted in San Francisco and coated in silver, and it fetched an incredible nearly $20,000 according to Chronicle Collectibles.
Special markings of this special 25 cent coin
The bicentennial Washington quarter was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the United States. It’s easily recognizable by its special dual date “1776-1976” on the front, and instead of the usual eagle, the back features a colonial drummer and a torch of victory, along with 13 stars. Interestingly, no quarters were made with a 1975 date because the bicentennial design was minted throughout both 1975 and 1976.
On the front, George Washington’s left-facing portrait is displayed, along with the words “LIBERTY” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Washington, the nation’s first president, served from 1789 to 1797.
On the reverse, the colonial drummer stands prominently, facing left, with the victory torch beside him. Surrounding the drummer are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s value, with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” nearby. This special design set the bicentennial quarter apart from other Washington quarters.
Since these quarters are not rare, you can come across one, but the San Francisco mint edition might be harder to source if that is your intended collectible. Regardless of which coin you come across, it is important o always verify your purchase with an expert that can attest to the provenance of the item, especially for the more valuable edition od the coin.
