Cathie Wood's Hot Take: Is Hyperliquid the Next Solana?

Sep 29, 2025 at 04:25 pm

Cathie Wood draws parallels between Hyperliquid and early Solana, sparking interest. We delve into the comparison, market dynamics, and what it means for crypto.

Cathie Wood's Hot Take: Is Hyperliquid the Next Solana?

Cathie Wood, ARK Invest's CEO, has crypto Twitter buzzing again. This time, it's her comparison of Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange (DEX), to the early days of Solana. Is it hype, or is there real potential? Let's dive into what's happening with Cathie Wood, Hyperliquid, and Solana.

Cathie Wood Sees 'Early Solana' Vibes in Hyperliquid

In a recent Master Investor podcast, Wood highlighted Hyperliquid's potential, drawing parallels to Solana's formative years. She noted how Solana proved its mettle, becoming a leading blockchain project. While she didn't confirm if ARK Invest is holding HYPE, Hyperliquid's native token, she clearly believes the platform is worth watching. Keep in mind that ARK's current crypto portfolio leans heavily into Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

Hyperliquid Heats Up Amidst DEX Competition

Wood's comments arrive at a time when the competition among perpetual futures DEXs is fierce. Aster, a multi-chain perps DEX, even briefly overtook Hyperliquid in trading volume after its token launch. Aster positions itself as a perpetuals-native, multi-chain, privacy-aware DEX. It offers 24/7 crypto and stock perpetuals with 1001x leverage, delivered in Simple and Pro modes, and settles positions non-custodially via smart contracts.

According to DeFiLlama, Aster briefly toppled Hyperliquid from its perch as the largest perps dex protocol, with the newcomer's 24-hour $42.88 billion perps trading volume dwarfing Hyperliquid's $4.61 billion.

Hyperliquid's NFT Play and Recent Hiccups

Hyperliquid isn't just about trading. The Hyper Foundation, the organization behind the DEX, launched an NFT collection called Hypurr on the HyperEVM network. These NFTs were distributed to early users as a souvenir for their early support. Each token is unique and reflects the sentiments, hobbies, tastes, and values of our community.

However, it hasn't all been smooth sailing. The Hyperdrive lending protocol, built on Hyperliquid, suffered a hacker attack, resulting in a loss of $782,000. Fortunately, the team quickly addressed the issue and compensated affected users.

The Big Picture: Bitcoin Still King?

Despite the excitement surrounding newer platforms like Hyperliquid, Wood maintains that Bitcoin remains the cornerstone of ARK's investment thesis. She emphasizes its fixed supply, resilience, and monetary attributes. She also acknowledges Ethereum's critical role in decentralized finance and the growing importance of stablecoins.

My Two Satoshis

Cathie Wood's comparison is intriguing, but it's crucial to remember that the crypto landscape is ever-evolving. Hyperliquid shows promise with its order-book DEX, potentially rivalling centralized exchanges in speed and liquidity. The launch of USDH, the first stablecoin, on the HyperEVM network could also be another advantage. However, the recent hack on Hyperdrive serves as a reminder of the inherent risks in DeFi. Whether Hyperliquid can truly become the next Solana remains to be seen, but it's definitely a project to keep an eye on.

So, is Hyperliquid the next big thing? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the crypto world never has a dull moment, does it?
