Canary Capital's Spot Litecoin ETF Proposal Faces Delay, Decision Pushed to a Later Date

Canary Capital's Spot Litecoin ETF Proposal Faces Delay, Decision Pushed to a Later Date

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pushed back the decision deadline for Canary Capital's hotly anticipated spot Litecoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) application.

What Happened: The agency was initially set to decide on the fate of the groundbreaking product by May 5, 2025. However, recent reports by Block on Thursday indicate that the ruling has been postponed, with the new date yet to be determined.

The SEC's decision is now running slightly later than the initial estimates by analysts. They had speculated that the agency would make a ruling sometime in early May.

Why It's Important: The SEC's stance on approving altcoins in the ETF market has been a key focus for crypto enthusiasts.

Several cryptocurrency ETF applications, such as those from Bitwise and WisdomTree for Bitcoin futures ETFs, experienced triple-digit-day delays earlier this year. However, Canary Capital's Litecoin ETF, one of the few altcoin ETF applications, had been progressing smoothly, with analysts anticipating an early approval.

This latest delay places the Litecoin ETF in line with the broader pattern of extended timelines that the SEC has taken with altcoin-related ETF applications.

The timing of the delay could be linked to recent internal changes at the SEC. A new commissioner, Jai 'Jay' Lee, was sworn in just two weeks ago and is still adjusting to the role.

This leadership transition may have contributed to the pause, as the agency may want all key decision-makers aligned before proceeding with a high-impact ruling on an altcoin ETF.

What's Next: Despite the setback, optimism remains. Analysts believe that many of the pending applications, including those from Fidelity, Invesco (NYSE:IVZ), and Point72, stand a good chance of approval by the year's end.

Canary Capital's Litecoin ETF is among the highly anticipated products still on the agenda.
