BlockFi Winds Down Operations, Teams with Coinbase for Customer Withdrawals

May 10, 2024 at 03:36 pm

Embattled crypto lender BlockFi shuts down operations and partners with Coinbase for customer fund withdrawals. The company's collaboration with Coinbase will facilitate the distribution of cryptocurrency holdings to eligible customers, aiming to return their assets by the May 2024 deadline. Clients who missed the previous withdrawal deadlines are given an additional opportunity to establish Coinbase accounts. BlockFi emphasizes caution against potential third-party scams and warns against deceptive emails mimicking official communications.

BlockFi Winding Down Operations, Announces Collaboration with Coinbase for Customer Withdrawals

BlockFi, the embattled crypto lender, has announced its intention to wind down operations and cease operations of its web platform by May 2024. As part of this process, BlockFi has entered into a partnership with Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, to facilitate the withdrawal of customer funds.

In a recent blog post, BlockFi outlined the details of this collaboration. Eligible BlockFi Interest Accounts (BIA), Retail Loans, and Private Clients will be able to withdraw their cryptocurrency holdings through Coinbase. This partnership marks a significant step in the company's efforts to return funds to its customers following its bankruptcy filing in November 2022.

BlockFi had previously set an April 28, 2024 deadline for withdrawal requests. However, the company acknowledged that some customers may have missed this deadline. To address this, BlockFi is providing an additional opportunity for these individuals. Clients who failed to withdraw their digital assets by the deadline will receive instructions on establishing a Coinbase account to facilitate withdrawals. This process can be completed using an existing Coinbase account or a newly created and approved account.

BlockFi emphasized that it has no intention of partnering with any other providers for cryptocurrency distributions. The company urged customers to be vigilant and avoid potential scams from third-party entities impersonating BlockFi.

The partnership with Coinbase will enable BlockFi to leverage the exchange's secure platform and robust infrastructure for the distribution of customer funds. Coinbase has a proven track record of handling large-scale cryptocurrency transactions and providing robust security measures.

BlockFi has been at the center of the recent turmoil in the crypto industry. The company's bankruptcy was triggered by the collapse of FTX, a major cryptocurrency exchange founded by Sam Bankman-Fried. BlockFi had significant exposure to FTX and suffered severe losses as a result of its collapse.

Following its bankruptcy filing, BlockFi reached an $875 million in-principle settlement with the estates of FTX and Alameda Research. This settlement resolved BlockFi's claims against FTX, totaling approximately a billion dollars, and also saw FTX waive "millions of dollars of avoidance claims and other counterclaims" against BlockFi.

BlockFi's CEO, Zac Prince, testified as a government witness in Bankman-Fried's criminal trial, alleging that the FTX founder's actions directly led to BlockFi's bankruptcy.

BlockFi's efforts to repay its creditors are ongoing. In September 2023, the bankruptcy court approved BlockFi's Chapter 11 plan to repay its 10,000 creditors. Estimates suggest that BlockFi owes up to $10 billion to over 100,000 creditors, including $1 billion to its three largest creditors and $220 million to bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.

The winding down of BlockFi's operations and the partnership with Coinbase represent a critical chapter in the fallout from the crypto industry's recent turmoil. The collaboration allows BlockFi to leverage Coinbase's expertise and security measures to ensure a smooth and efficient distribution of customer funds.
