Bitcoin Whales Transfer $500 Million, Reshaping Cryptocurrency Landscape
Jakarta, December 28, 2022 - Owners of vast Bitcoin holdings, known as whales, have engaged in significant transactions, transferring 14,712 BTC, valued at approximately $500 million, to an unidentified digital wallet address. This series of 11 transfers transpired over a 17-hour period.
According to The Daily Hodl, the only variable in these transactions was the total value of the US dollar, as market fluctuations impacted the price of Bitcoin. During the initial transfer, the BTC was valued at $616.18 million, which subsequently decreased to $591.87 million by the second transaction, reflecting a nearly 4% decline.
As the substantial amount of Bitcoin traversed multiple wallet addresses, its value witnessed a slight recovery to $593.72 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin has experienced a 2.6% decline in the last 24 hours, trading at $39,731 per coin.
Glassnode, an analytics firm, emphasized in a Twitter post that the prevailing bearish sentiment in the cryptocurrency market since late 2021 has had a transformative effect on the Bitcoin investor landscape.
"This bear market has remodeled Bitcoin ownership, with BTC flowing away from short-term speculators and accumulating in the hands of long-term investors. Statistically, it appears that we have just witnessed the most significant capitulation from both groups," Glassnode stated.
"The last five months have featured a correction exceeding 50%, which seems to have substantially altered BTC's ownership composition. While long-term holders possessing coins valued above $50,000 appear relatively unaffected, others are experiencing heightened volatility, reaching historically significant levels."
Glassnode subsequently released an in-depth video analysis of the situation, elaborating that the current market conditions have provoked short-term Bitcoin holders to divest their holdings as prices fluctuate. Notably, however, the market conditions have also affected long-term Bitcoin holders, who have reportedly "largely given up" during the ongoing bear market.
