Bitcoin Whale Stirs After Decade, Transfers $61 Million

May 14, 2024 at 06:45 am

A Bitcoin whale has awakened after 11 years of dormancy, transferring 1,000 BTC worth $61 million to new wallets amid the cryptocurrency's price recovery. The whale, holding dormant funds since 2013, has witnessed a staggering 50,000% appreciation in Bitcoin's value, showcasing the long-term potential of the digital asset.

Bitcoin Whale Stirs After Decade, Transfers $61 Million

Dormant Bitcoin Whale Resurfaces, Moving $61 Million in Cryptocurrency

In a significant development within the cryptocurrency industry, a long-inactive Bitcoin whale has recently re-emerged, transferring a substantial amount of digital assets. On May 12, 2024, on-chain analysis service Lookonchain detected two transactions originating from wallets that had been dormant for over 10.7 years. The transactions involved the movement of 1,000 Bitcoin (BTC), currently valued at approximately $61 million, to new cryptocurrency wallets.

The dormant wallets had received 500 BTC each in September 2013, when the cryptocurrency was trading at a mere $124 per coin. At the time, the whale acquired a total of $124,000 worth of BTC. Since then, the price of Bitcoin has appreciated significantly, reaching approximately $63,000 per coin. The whale's decision to transfer these funds now represents a potential profit of around 50,000%.

The whale's resurfacing coincides with a period of relative stability in the price of Bitcoin. Over the past month, the cryptocurrency has fluctuated within a range of $59,000 and $67,000, following a decline from its all-time high of $73,000 earlier this year. Some analysts attribute this recent stability to the launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States.

Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency market has witnessed significant institutional interest in recent months. Wall Street giant Susquehanna International Group has significantly increased its exposure to Bitcoin, amassing a $1.2 billion position in the first quarter of 2024. This investment includes holdings in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's spot Bitcoin ETF.

The re-emergence of the Bitcoin whale and the growing institutional interest underscore the evolving landscape of the cryptocurrency industry. As Bitcoin and other digital assets gain wider acceptance, we can expect further volatility and potential opportunities for investors. It remains to be seen whether the whale's recent movements signify a trend towards increased market activity or are merely an isolated event.
