Bitcoin Was Trading At $0.05 14 Years Ago, See How Much You Would've Made If You Bought $100 Worth

The low price of Bitcoin when it was launched and how much the digital asset has grown over the years has been a constant source of regret

Bitcoin Was Trading At $0.05 14 Years Ago, See How Much You Would've Made If You Bought $100 Worth

On August 3, 2024, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading at $0.05 14 years ago, according to Pete Rizzo, author of the Bitcoin History newsletter. This price point, which is difficult to fathom from today's perspective, presented a unique opportunity for those who discovered the cryptocurrency early on.

Rizzo shared this tidbit on the X (formerly Twitter) platform, highlighting the incredible journey of BTC.

FUN FACT: 14 years ago today, you could buy 1 #Bitcoin for $0.05 ✨ pic.twitter.com/hfDXMxWrWn

This price of Bitcoin during its early days showcases the value proposition offered by the cryptocurrency and the opportunity that was available to those who chose to buy it. It presented a once-in-a-lifetime chance for generational wealth, the benefits of which continue to accrue for those who took advantage of it.

To put this in perspective, spending $100 on BTC 14 years ago, when it was trading at just $0.05, would have netted the buyer 2,000 BTC at the time. Since then, the BTC price has surged by over 125 million percent, turning cents into millions.

At the current BTC price of around $57,000, the 2,000 BTC acquired by spending $100 would now be valued at $114 million. This incredible gain highlights how Bitcoin has outperformed every single stock since its inception and also proved to be a better store of value than traditional assets like gold.

Further Upside Expected for BTC

The current $114 million value realized from a $100 investment in Bitcoin 14 years ago comes at a time when the price is enduring a lull. However, expectations remain that the BTC price will eventually cross $100,000 as the crypto market enters another bull cycle. In such a scenario, the $100 from 14 years ago would be valued at an astonishing $200 million.

Interestingly, prominent figures like MicroStrategy's Michael Saylor and ARK Invest's Cathie Wood believe that the BTC price will reach $1 million per coin. If this were to happen, 2,000 BTC would be valued at an incredible $2 billion.

Bitcoin's growth over this time has solidified its status as ‘digital gold.’ It is now widely touted as the best store of value against the rapidly rising inflation that continues to plague most parts of the world.
