Bitcoin Surges Above $70,000, Triggering Derivative Market Liquidations

April 11, 2024

Bitcoin (BTC), the preeminent cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has ascended back above the $70,000 threshold on April 11, 2024, provoking substantial liquidations throughout the derivatives markets.

According to CoinMarketCap data, BTC's price witnessed a rapid surge, rising from an opening price of $69,198 during the commencement of the European trading session on Wednesday, April 10, to an intraday high of $71,138 on April 11.

At the time of publication, Bitcoin was trading at $70,852, reflecting a 2.17% increment over the preceding 24 hours.

Surge in Trading Volume and Market Capitalization

The daily trading volume of Bitcoin has experienced an 11% surge over the same timeframe, reaching $37.6 billion. This robust performance has boosted Bitcoin's market capitalization to $1.399 billion, reinforcing its position as the world's most valuable cryptocurrency.

Liquidations Accompany BTC's Recovery

The ascent of BTC above $70,000 has triggered the liquidation of numerous leveraged positions across the crypto market. Coinglass data reveals that over $204.44 million in liquidations have transpired, with $108 million pertaining to long liquidations over the past 24 hours. Moreover, the last 24 hours have witnessed $45.62 million in liquidations of short position BTCs, with the tally continuing at the time of publication.

The most substantial single liquidation order, valued at $7.72 million, was executed on Binance for the BTC/USD pair.

Traders Enthused by Bitcoin's Rise

Traders and crypto analysts have expressed jubilation at Bitcoin's recovery, as its price finally surpassed the $70,000 resistance.

Crypto trader and X user Ali noted that Bitcoin's trading above $70,000 could potentially lead to a surge above $85,000 in the following days, provided that support at $70,800 endures.

Crypto educator and trader Daan Crypto Trades shared a chart on X, highlighting that BTC must decisively breach and maintain support above $71.5K to potentially reach its all-time highs.

Technical Outlook

Bitcoin's price was trading within a rounded bottom chart pattern on the four-hour chart. Moving averages were trailing the price action, while the relative strength index (RSI) oscillated within the positive region at 59.98, suggesting continued upside potential.

Bullish sentiment seeks to propel the price above the neckline of the prevailing chart pattern at $72,503. A daily candlestick close above this level would validate a bullish breakout from the governing chart pattern. Subsequently, crucial resistance levels to monitor are the psychological $75,000 and the technical target of $76,780, representing a potential 8% gain.

However, if bearish forces prevail, they will attempt to drag the price below the rounded bottom chart pattern, with the 50-day exponential moving average at $69,338 acting as the initial defense line. Further declines may lead to support levels at $68,762 (100-day EMA) and the pattern's bottom at $60,771.
