Bitcoin Surges Almost 8%, Reaching Two-Month Peak Amid Global Volatility

May 05, 2024 at 06:03 am

Bitcoin's value has escalated by close to 8 percent in the past 24 hours, surpassing $8,500 per coin for the first time in weeks. It is currently trading at around $8,700, marking its highest point in two months. Political instability, such as the recent US strike on Iran, and events like Venezuela's internet shutdown have been suggested as possible reasons for this bullish trend.

Bitcoin Soars Nearly 8%, Scaling to a Two-Month High Amid Global Turbulence

In a remarkable surge, Bitcoin (BTC) has registered a staggering 8 percent price increase within the past 24 hours, reaching levels unseen in weeks. Market data from Messari reveals that the leading cryptocurrency by market capitalization is now trading above $8,500 per coin, marking a significant two-month high.

Bitcoin's trajectory has witnessed a remarkable turnaround since November 2019, when it hovered around these price levels. However, the ensuing months brought a persistent decline, with prices plummeting below $7,000 in early 2020.

Analysts attribute Bitcoin's recent bullish behavior to the escalating political turmoil across the globe. Earlier this month, the cryptocurrency experienced a surge following a US air strike on Iran that claimed the life of a top general.

Today, a separate event potentially influenced Bitcoin's price action. An Internet shutdown in Venezuela coincided with another jump in BTC's value, possibly triggered by news of the socialist nation's National Assembly implementing restrictions on social media platforms.

Venezuela's rampant hyperinflation has rendered the national currency, the bolivar, virtually worthless, driving Venezuelans towards alternative payment options such as Bitcoin and Dash.

The positive sentiment surrounding Bitcoin has reverberated throughout the cryptocurrency market. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has gained nearly 13 percent, currently trading at $162 per token. Bitcoin SV, a controversial hard fork of Bitcoin, has achieved an all-time high of $328 per coin.

As Bitcoin continues to set the pace, it remains to be seen whether the cryptocurrency's ascent can sustain its momentum amidst the ongoing global uncertainty. However, the recent price action has demonstrated Bitcoin's resilience and potential to serve as a safe haven asset during periods of political and economic instability.
