Bitcoin Surges, Driven by ETF Optimism and Regulatory Expectations
May 18, 2024 at 02:36 pm
On Friday, Bitcoin's price surged past $67,000, experiencing a 3% increase in the past 24 hours. The resurgence was driven by several positive developments in Bitcoin ETFs, including a substantial investment by Morgan Stanley in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust. Additionally, anticipation of regulatory advancements in the U.S. and optimistic prospects for an Ethereum ETF approval contributed to the bullish momentum.

Bitcoin Rebounds, Led by ETF and Regulatory Optimism
On Friday, Bitcoin (BTC) surged past $67,000, recovering from its brief dip below $65,000 the previous day. As of writing, Bitcoin trades around $67,160, marking a 3% increase over the past 24 hours.
This resurgence is attributed to positive developments in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and anticipation of regulatory progress in the United States.
ETF Additions and Morgan Stanley Investment
For the past four consecutive days, Bitcoin ETFs have seen new additions. Notably, Morgan Stanley disclosed a significant investment of $269.9 million in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). These inflows have boosted optimism among investors.
U.S. Regulatory Anticipation
The U.S. House of Representatives prepares to vote on the FIT21 bill, a crucial step towards cryptocurrency regulation. The legislation proposes to designate the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as the primary regulator of digital assets, establishing clear guidelines alongside the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The FIT21 bill aims to enhance consumer protection, mitigate risks, foster blockchain innovation, promote financial inclusion, and strengthen national security. The vote is scheduled for next week.
Impending Options Expiration
The cryptocurrency market faces an impending liquidation event, with $2.1 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum options set to expire today. This includes 18,183 Bitcoin option contracts valued at $1.184 billion and 321,925 Ethereum contracts worth over $940 million. The expiration may lead to increased market volatility.
Ethereum ETF Approval Prospects
David Han, an analyst at Coinbase Global (COIN), suggests that the market underestimates the likelihood of spot Ethereum ETF approval despite prevailing pessimism. Han notes the absence of significant oversupplies that could pressure Ether's price.
With significant SEC decisions expected on May 23 and 24 regarding applications from VanEck and ArkInvest/21 Shares, the outcome remains uncertain. However, Coinbase maintains cautious optimism based on previous Bitcoin ETF approvals. Han also highlights critical distinctions between Ethereum and Bitcoin, particularly the proof-of-stake mechanism, which could influence the decision.
Chainlink's Smart NAV Pilot
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) announced positive results from its Smart NAV pilot. Leveraging distributed ledger technology, the pilot aimed to enhance data dissemination in mutual fund services. Chainlink's technology played a pivotal role in facilitating interoperability and data transmission between blockchains.
This development boosted the price of Chainlink (LINK), reaching $16.77, representing a 13.22% increase over the past week.
Solana's Transaction Speed Leadership
Solana has emerged as a leader in transaction speed among major blockchains. On April 6, it achieved a record 1,504 transactions per second (TPS). This milestone, driven by the popularity of memecoins, positions Solana well ahead of Ethereum and Polygon.
However, Solana operated at only 1.6% of its theoretical maximum capacity of 65,000 TPS, raising questions about future updates to enhance its processing capacity.
French Regulator Warns on Bybit
The Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) of France issued a warning regarding the unauthorized operation of Bybit in the country. Bybit, the third-largest exchange by trading volume, has not met the requirements to operate as a digital asset service provider in France.
The AMF, which blacklisted Bybit in May 2022, is considering legal actions and potential access restrictions to the platform in France. Investors are urged to exercise caution.
Market Outlook
The cryptocurrency market remains dynamic, with regulatory developments and key events shaping investor sentiment and market trends. As the U.S. House of Representatives vote on the FIT21 bill and Bitcoin and Ethereum options expire, market participants navigate opportunities and challenges in the ever-evolving crypto landscape.
