Bitcoin's Sudden Dive Triggers Jitters Among Short-Term Holders

May 02, 2024 at 12:38 pm

Bitcoin's recent plunge below its average purchase price has raised concerns among short-term holders, who now face unrealized losses. Analyst James Check warns that these investors are the "most likely to panic" and suggests that the price slump may continue, potentially triggering a broader market sell-off.

Bitcoin's Sudden Dive Triggers Jitters Among Short-Term Holders

Bitcoin's Abrupt Decline Triggers Alarm Among Short-Term Holders

New York, May 1 - In a sudden and alarming reversal, Bitcoin has plunged 4% below its average purchase price, sparking fears among short-term holders who now face an unrealized loss of 3%. According to analyst James Check, these recent buyers are statistically the most susceptible to panic.

"What a bombshell to start the month of May," Check exclaimed, referring to Bitcoin's precipitous 8% drop below a crucial support level to $56,814 on May 1. This decline marks Bitcoin's lowest price point since February, raising concerns for short-term investors who have held for less than 155 days and paid an average of $59,600 per Bitcoin.

Despite a marginal rebound to $57,631 at the time of publication, short-term investors remain in the red with an average unrealized loss of 3%. The substantial decline resulted in the liquidation of $100.27 million in long bets, as per data from CoinGlass.

The sell-off coincides with market participants eagerly awaiting the Federal Reserve's interest rate announcement, which ultimately maintained the existing high interest rates as predicted by analysts. While acknowledging that unrealized losses are undesirable, Check emphasizes that short-term Bitcoin holders have weathered similar storms in the past.

"Crucially, breaking the [short-term holder] cost basis is not the end of the world, nor the end of the bull market," Check wrote. "It doesn't help...but it is and has been recoverable."

Meanwhile, crypto trading resource On-Chain College suggests that the short-term holder cost basis often acts as a support during bull markets and resistance during bear markets. However, it identifies several potential scenarios that would not indicate "the bull market is over."

One scenario, described as "bullish," is a "quick move" to $59,600, which is approximately 2.2% above Bitcoin's current price. This pattern resembles a similar trajectory observed in June 2023, when the price dropped below the cost basis but promptly recovered, paving the way for a substantial surge.

On-Chain College also highlights an instance in August 2023, when Bitcoin's price dipped below the short-term cost basis for an extended period, leading to erratic price movements. This suggests that a "sustained period" below the cost base could potentially foreshadow a bullish trend, according to On-Chain College.

The recent price fluctuations underscore the volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency market, particularly for short-term holders. However, the historical resilience of Bitcoin and the potential for a "quick move" above the cost basis offer a glimmer of hope for those investors who remain steadfast in their conviction.
