Bitcoin Standard Shows Path for Memecoins

Jan 20, 2025 at 09:15 pm

The crypto landscape is certainly nothing new to being volatile. Yet, one thing was for sure as memecoins popped out the victory—now, more with the descent on inherent speculators and vulnerability.

Bitcoin Standard Shows Path for Memecoins

Memecoins, a category of cryptocurrencies that have gained popularity largely due to their association with internet memes or viral trends, have been a hot topic of discussion in the crypto community. While some memecoins, such as Dogecoin (DOGE), have managed to achieve surprising success, crypto experts remain skeptical about the long-term viability of memecoins in general.

One of the main criticisms leveled against memecoins is their lack of intrinsic value. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), which are underpinned by a robust blockchain framework and industrial utility, memecoins often have little to no real-world applications or use cases. Their value is primarily driven by speculation and hype, which can lead to extreme volatility and potential risks for investors.

As a memecoin gains popularity, it tends to attract a large number of traders who pile in late, hoping to ride the wave of rising prices. However, the quick ascent can also lead to a rapid descent, leaving latecomers vulnerable to significant losses. This dynamic is further exacerbated by the trading platforms themselves, which siphon transaction fees, essentially turning the already speculative venture into a net loss game for the majority of traders.

While there have been a few success stories of memecoins evolving into utility-driven assets with dedicated communities, such as Gamestop (GME) and AMC (AMC), many have not managed to find value beyond the realm of speculative trading. Their long-term viability hinges on their ability to transition into real-world applications and demonstrate value beyond the meme factor.

However, without substantial foundations or evident applications, memecoins are inherently risky ventures, drawing skepticism from crypto experts like Former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan.

In a recent tweet, Srinivasan highlighted the zero-sum nature of memecoins, contrasting them with Bitcoin. While anyone is free to consider any asset a memecoin, he invites discussion on why Bitcoin is perceived differently.

According to Srinivasan, Bitcoin is the base layer asset of a blockchain with approximately 800 Th/s in hashrate distributed across hundreds of datacenters globally. It hasn’t been centrally planned or designed, and its value is not pegged to any external assets.

This contrasts sharply with the memecoins, which are typically created quickly and easily, often without any clear purpose or application beyond the meme itself. Their value is largely determined by hype and speculation, rather than any inherent properties or use cases.

As a result, memecoins can be highly volatile, with prices fluctuating wildly over short periods of time. This volatility makes them risky investments, and it’s possible to lose money quickly if you’re not careful. However, Bitcoin’s price has risen steadily over the long term, making it a more attractive investment for those looking to preserve their capital.
