Bitcoin Soars Above $65,000, Triggering Crypto Market Boom
May 08, 2024 at 11:08 am
Bitcoin surpassed $65,000 on Monday, reaching its highest point in over a week. The global cryptocurrency market capitalization has also experienced growth, reaching $2.5 trillion. Bitcoin transactions have recently surged, with Runes, a protocol built on Bitcoin, driving this increase and accounting for approximately 60% of all transactions on the network yesterday.

Bitcoin Surges Above $65,000, Crypto Market Flourishes
On Monday, January 16, 2023, Bitcoin reached a significant milestone, breaking the $65,000 price barrier for the first time in over a week. Despite a slight retraction since hitting this peak, Bitcoin remains 0.5% higher than its value 24 hours prior.
This positive momentum has had a ripple effect on the broader crypto market. According to data from CoinGecko, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization has surged by 1.3% over the past day, reaching an impressive $2.5 trillion.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin has retraced to $64,264.08, still representing a 3% increase from its price point this time last week. Trading volume for Bitcoin has been substantial, with $13 billion worth of BTC exchanged within the past 24 hours. Notably, approximately 22% of this volume occurred on Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by volume.
Binance data indicates that the First Digital USD (FDUSD) stablecoin has emerged as the most popular trading pair for Bitcoin traders. FDUSD, introduced by Hong Kong-based First Digital Labs in 2023, has facilitated $3 billion worth of volume over the past day.
In another significant development, the Bitcoin network has processed its one billionth transaction, marking a remarkable milestone for the world's oldest and largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
Last year, Bitcoin daily transactions reached an all-time high due to the surge in popularity of BRC-20 tokens and Ordinals. However, these innovations sparked some controversy, with developers expressing concerns about their potential impact on the network.
Currently, a newcomer known as Runes has become a major driver of increased daily transactions. According to a Dune dashboard, the Bitcoin network processed 304,306 Runes transactions yesterday, compared to 193,439 "good old BTC" transactions and approximately 4,000 Ordinals and BRC-20 transactions combined. This means that Runes accounted for roughly 60% of all transactions on the network yesterday.
Runes is a protocol built on top of Bitcoin. It has been described as a project that continues the legacy of BRC-20 tokens, effectively introducing NFT-like assets to the network. Runes aims to enhance the process of creating fungible tokens on Bitcoin and has ushered in a new era of shitcoins for the crypto OG.
Over the weekend, several other noteworthy Bitcoin developments emerged.
Firstly, a 13-year-old wallet that has held 687 Bitcoin since its value was a mere $2 has recently moved its stash. This transaction was highlighted by Bitgrow founder Vivek Sen on Twitter.
It is difficult to ascertain the reason behind this movement, but traders often interpret such actions positively, seeing it as a sign that long-term holders remain confident in Bitcoin's value.
"The owner of the wallet hodled all the way from $2 to 65,000," Sen remarked. "What a legend!"
In another notable event, the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 119 has been activated. This proposal allows for the introduction of Schnorr signatures, a new type of digital signature that is more efficient and secure than the currently used Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA).
The activation of BIP 119 is expected to enhance Bitcoin's transaction capacity and security, further solidifying its position as a leading cryptocurrency.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, Bitcoin remains a pivotal force, setting the tone for the broader ecosystem. Its recent surge above $65,000 and the positive developments surrounding the network underscore its enduring relevance and potential for growth.
