Bitcoin Soars Past $65,000, Fueled by Fed Rate Cut Expectations

May 17, 2024 at 11:09 pm

After a recovery, Bitcoin's price range widened, ranging from $60,000 to $70,000, while other cryptocurrencies like Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, and Avalanche also saw gains. However, the global cryptocurrency market cap dipped by 0.29%, reaching approximately $2.38 trillion.

Bitcoin Surges Past $65,000, Igniting Bullish Optimism Amid US Fed Rate Cut Expectations

In a remarkable display of resilience, Bitcoin (BTC), the world's largest cryptocurrency, has surged past the $65,000 mark, gaining an impressive 7% within a span of 24 hours. This resurgence has fueled a wave of optimism within the cryptocurrency market, particularly as it coincides with rising hopes for interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve.

Over the past seven days, Bitcoin has achieved significant gains, rebounding from a low of $60,000 and posting an approximate 8% increase. This upward trajectory has been primarily driven by a weaker US dollar and indications of easing inflation in the country.

"Bitcoin's meteoric rise shows a remarkable 7% gain within 24 hours, a sign of its resilience and bullish momentum," said Nischal Shetty, Co-founder of Shardeum. "However, the cryptocurrency landscape has evolved, with newcomers demanding more than just price fluctuations. It is imperative for the ecosystem to prioritize user-friendly applications that showcase tangible use cases to appeal to a broader audience."

Bitcoin's market cap has soared to $1.309 trillion, and its market dominance now stands at an impressive 54.69%, as reported by CoinMarketCap. During this period, BTC's trading volume has decreased by 27.4%, totaling $30.9 billion.

Avinash Shekhar, Co-founder and CEO of Pi42, believes that Bitcoin is in the midst of a bull cycle. "Its market cap is growing faster than its realized cap, a trend that typically lasts around two years," he explained. "If this pattern continues, the bull cycle might end by April 2025. Another reason for the boost could be the ETF inflows in May that have already offset April's outflows."

Factors Influencing Bitcoin's Price Trajectory

According to market experts, Bitcoin's price trajectory in the short term could be influenced by a combination of technical indicators, market sentiment, and institutional investors' actions.

The appointment of Salim Ramji, former BlackRock executive, as Vanguard's new CEO has sparked speculation that the investment giant could embrace cryptocurrencies. "Analysts are wondering whether Vanguard, under the leadership of an ETF veteran from the crypto-friendly BlackRock, would finally turn bullish on Bitcoin," said Rajagopal Menon, VP of WazirX. "This surge also followed the 13F filings revelation that 1,028 firms with over $100 million in assets under management collectively own $11 billion in Bitcoin as of March 2024, with Millennium Management emerging as the largest holder at $2 billion."

Long-Term Prospects: Fundamentals and Adoption

Looking ahead, the long-term prospects for Bitcoin remain tied to its fundamentals, including its limited supply and growing adoption as a store of value and hedge against inflation, according to Siddharta Gupta, SVP of Business and Strategic Alliances at CoinDCX.

"The approval of ETFs in the US and Hong Kong, and ETNs in London, has bolstered Bitcoin's legitimacy and price stability over time," said Gupta. "However, it's crucial to remain mindful of potential risks and uncertainties, including regulatory developments, technological advancements, and macroeconomic shifts. While historical trends and halving cycles provide valuable insights, the future trajectory of Bitcoin prices will likely be shaped by a complex interplay of factors, making precise predictions challenging."

Conclusion

Bitcoin's recent surge past the $65,000 mark is a testament to its resilience and bullish momentum. While short-term price movements may be influenced by technical indicators and market sentiment, the long-term prospects for Bitcoin remain tied to its fundamentals, including its limited supply and growing adoption as a store of value.
