Is a Bitcoin Short Squeeze Scenario About to Play Out?

Nov 11, 2024 at 04:04 am

After pushing to a new high above $76,000, Bitcoin has found itself struggling to keep up the momentum. As a result, bearish expectations have been on the rise and nowhere was this more evident than in the derivatives segment.

Is a Bitcoin Short Squeeze Scenario About to Play Out?

Bitcoin price analysis for the last 3 days reveals a shift in derivatives sentiment. The ratio of longs versus shorts experienced a complete 180, with shorts now being opened at twice the rate of longs. This marks a significant change from the previous 3 days, where longs were opening at 1.5 times the rate of shorts.

The shift in sentiment is also evident in the funding rates, which turned negative as a result of the大量涌入short positions. According to a recent analysis by CryptoQuant, this could be setting the stage for a short squeeze scenario.

A short squeeze occurs when a large number of traders who have sold an asset short are forced to buy it back to cover their positions, typically due to a rapid increase in the asset's price. This buying can drive the price even higher, leading to further short covering and potentially a massive short squeeze.

The analysis points to the record-high open interest and negative funding rates as two key indicators of a short squeeze. It also notes a surge in short positions at top exchanges, which could be a sign of traders betting on a downturn in Bitcoin's price.

However, the analysis suggests that a short squeeze may have already occurred, possibly in response to the announcement of Trump as the winner in the presidential race. This forced short sellers to buy in order to cover their positions, which may have contributed to the recent all-time high.

Bitcoin price analysis after stalling near its recent highs shows no clear directional bias, leaving it vulnerable to a move in either direction. However, on-chain data could provide some insight into the likely flow of BTC price.

Bitcoin ETFs were a majorبالقوة المحركة behind BTC price action in 2024, and their activity could help determine whether the bulls will continue rallying. Institutions tend to be less active during the weekend, which may explain the slowdown in Bitcoin price.

ETFs will resume activity on Monday, which could lead to a resurgence in volatility. If ETF inflows continue, they will likely push prices higher. Meanwhile, exchange flow data still favors the bulls.

Exchange flows tanked in the last 2 days, but exchange outflows were still slightly higher than inflows. The higher exchange outflows appear to be protecting BTC from downside, but market sentiment could still shift moving into the new week.

If prices continue rising, we can expect more liquidations. On the other hand, a resurgence of sell pressure could trigger a wave of sell pressure and yield profits for short sellers.
