This approach requires miners to stake their own cryptocurrency as collateral, eliminating the need for energy-intensive puzzles. As a result, Ethereum's energy consumption has plummeted by a staggering 99.9 percent.
While Bitcoin's initial aspiration was to replace physical cash, its volatile value and unpredictable fluctuations have rendered it unsuitable for everyday transactions. Its value, instead of exhibiting stability, oscillates wildly, making it an unviable medium of exchange for routine purchases.
Instead, Bitcoin has found its niche as a speculative asset, traded primarily for profit. This speculative nature has drawn criticism from economists, who view it as a zero-sum game where the gains of one investor are offset by the losses of others.
Moreover, unlike gold, which has intrinsic value as a precious metal, Bitcoin is purely virtual. When a cryptocurrency investment falters, its value vanishes into the digital void, leaving investors with nothing tangible to show for their losses.
Despite these concerns, Bitcoin's existence has prompted a lively debate about the nature of money and the limits of government control. Some argue that its decentralized nature and scarcity provide a refuge from the vagaries of traditional financial systems.
