Bitcoin Plunges Below $60,000, Triggers $215 Million Liquidation Cascade
Apr 18, 2024 at 01:14 am
Amidst a broader market selloff, Bitcoin's price has plummeted below $60,000, reaching lows last seen in February. This sharp decline has triggered over $215 million in liquidations across the crypto market within the past 24 hours, affecting over 67,000 traders. Analysts speculate that geopolitical tensions and elevated funding rates may have contributed to this market sell-off.

Bitcoin Plunges Below $60,000, Triggering a $215 Million Liquidation Cascade
The cryptocurrency market has been roiled by a significant selloff, with Bitcoin (BTC) shedding over 5% of its value to breach the $60,000 mark. This sudden downturn has triggered a wave of liquidations, wiping out nearly $216 million from the market.
On Wednesday, Bitcoin commenced trading at approximately $63,700 per coin. However, the price began a precipitous decline at approximately 1:40 PM UTC, tumbling to a low of $59,950 by 4:45 PM UTC. At press time, Bitcoin is trading around $60,475.
Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, has also succumbed to the market slide, dipping below $3,000 to hover around $2,950. The broader stock market has also been impacted, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 declining by 0.68% and 1.27%, respectively.
According to data from Coinglass, the market selloff has resulted in a staggering $216 million worth of liquidations across the crypto market within the past 24 hours. Over 67,000 traders have been impacted, including one who incurred a hefty $5.4 million loss on an ETH-USD swap.
Analysts attribute the market selloff to a combination of factors, including escalating geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel following a barrage of drones and missiles launched by the former over the weekend. Additionally, a recent note from a CryptoQuant analyst suggested that Bitcoin could face further downward pressure due to elevated funding rates compared to historical averages.
The sudden price drop has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community, raising concerns about the stability of the market. However, it is important to note that Bitcoin has experienced similar price fluctuations in the past and has consistently rebounded.
As the market continues to grapple with the recent sell-off, investors are advised to exercise caution and consider adjusting their investment strategies accordingly. The cryptocurrency market remains highly volatile, and sudden price movements can result in significant gains or losses.
