Bitcoin Plunges Below $60K, Triggering Mass Liquidations

May 03, 2024 at 08:00 am

Bitcoin has fallen below $60,000, leading to liquidations of over $100 million in long positions. These liquidations have been accompanied by an increase in Bitcoin inflows to exchanges, indicating increased selling activity. The decline in price has seen the RSI drop into bearish territory, reinforcing the negative trend.

Bitcoin Plunges Below $60K, Triggering Mass Liquidations

Bitcoin Price Slumps Below $60,000, Sparking Liquidation Surge

The cryptocurrency market has been rocked by a significant sell-off, with Bitcoin (BTC) seeing its price plummet below the crucial $60,000 threshold. The decline has triggered a wave of liquidations, primarily affecting traders holding long positions.

Liquidations Surpass $100 Million

According to data from Crypto Rank, the total market liquidations reached a staggering $464 million on May 1st, with Bitcoin accounting for over $136 million of this outflow. An analysis of Coinglass's Bitcoin liquidation chart revealed that long positions bore the brunt of the liquidations. On May 1st alone, approximately $100.3 million worth of long positions were liquidated, while short liquidations amounted to around $36.4 million.

A similar pattern was observed on April 30th, with long positions facing more liquidations. Over $95 million in long positions were liquidated, compared to approximately $18.4 million in short liquidations. Long liquidations represented over 80% of the total liquidations recorded on May 1st.

At the time of writing, nearly $13 million had been liquidated in long positions, while short liquidations amounted to around $2 million.

Increased Exchange Inflow

The Bitcoin Exchange Netflow indicated a notable increase in the number of assets being sent to exchanges, suggesting increased selling activity. This was evident on May 1st, when the number of assets sent to exchanges reached 1200. Further analysis revealed an inflow of over 32,300 BTC, suggesting an ongoing trend of increased BTC being sent to exchanges.

Free Fall in Bitcoin Price

Bitcoin's daily chart analysis revealed a continuous decline in price over the past three days. On May 1st, BTC experienced a loss of 3.89%, with the price dropping to around $58,260. This marked the first time Bitcoin fell below the $60,000 price range since its March surge. At the time of writing, BTC was trading at approximately $57,740, showing a less than 1% decline.

The prolonged price decline has entrenched a bearish trend, as indicated by Bitcoin's Relative Strength Index (RSI). The downward trajectory in price is contributing to increased exchange inflow and liquidation of long positions. This sell-off highlights the volatility of the cryptocurrency market and the importance of risk-management strategies for traders.
