Bitcoin Mining Stock Prices Sink Ahead of Halving Amid Unfounded Post-Halving Jitters
Apr 17, 2024 at 07:28 pm
As the highly anticipated 2024 Bitcoin halving approaches, Blockware Solutions analyst Mitchell Askew predicts a "buy-the-news" event. Askew believes the halving will trigger a rebound in crypto-mining stocks, despite recent declines in the wake of macroeconomic concerns.

Bitcoin Mining Stocks Tumble Ahead of Halving Amidst Unsubstantiated Post-Halving Concerns
New York, NY – March 15, 2023 – As the highly anticipated Bitcoin halving event approaches, the cryptocurrency market has been abuzz with speculation and anticipation. However, recent market sentiment has been overshadowed by concerns surrounding the potential impact on Bitcoin mining profitability post-halving, leading to a sharp decline in the stock prices of several publicly traded mining companies.
Bitcoin Mining Stocks Plunge
Over the past four weeks, Marathon Digital Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: MARA) has witnessed a significant drop of over 34% in its stock value, currently trading around $14.74. Similarly, Riot Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: RIOT) has endured a steep decline of over 47% year-to-date, hovering around $8.14 as of this report.
CleanSpark Inc (NASDAQ: CLSK), Bitdeer Technologies Group Technologies Group (NASDAQ: BTDR), and Australia-based Iris Energy Ltd (NASDAQ: IREN) have also experienced substantial losses, with decreases of 28%, 35%, and 39% year-to-date, respectively. Canadian-based Bitfarms Ltd (NASDAQ: BITF) and New York-based Cipher Mining Inc (NASDAQ: CIFR) have also faced setbacks, with declines of 41% and 26%, respectively. Bit Digital Inc (NASDAQ: BTBT) has dropped over 56% year-to-date, currently trading at around $1.87.
Unfounded Post-Halving Fears
Despite the concerns surrounding profitability, Mitchell Askew, a leading analyst at Blockware Solutions, believes the upcoming Bitcoin halving event will likely trigger a "buy the news" scenario. Askew recently addressed the market's anticipation of a further dip amidst the ongoing global crises, including the Middle East conflict and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
"The halving will be a 'buy the news' event for public Bitcoin miners and the private ASIC market," Askew remarked.
Askew anticipates a general rebound in crypto-mining stocks in tandem with Bitcoin prices over the coming weeks. Jaran Mellerud, founder and chief mining strategist of Hashlabs Mining, has also suggested that some US-based Bitcoin miners may relocate overseas in pursuit of cheaper electricity costs after the halving event.
Halving Impact on Bitcoin Price
As previously reported by Coinspeaker, Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market have been influenced by the macroeconomic outlook, particularly the ongoing inflation concerns within the United States. According to prominent crypto analyst Michael van de Poppe, Bitcoin price may have established a local peak and could consolidate within a range before resuming its previous bullish trend.
Conclusions
While the Bitcoin halving event has generated excitement and anticipation within the crypto community, concerns regarding profitability have cast a shadow over sentiment, leading to a sell-off in Bitcoin mining stocks. However, analysts like Mitchell Askew remain optimistic, predicting a "buy the news" scenario that could buoy both Bitcoin prices and mining stocks in the aftermath of the halving.
As the halving date approaches, investors are advised to remain vigilant and monitor market developments closely. With the potential for both upside and downside fluctuations, informed decision-making and risk management are crucial.
