Bitcoin and Ethereum Trade Sideways as Crypto Market Cools Down - Decrypt

Mar 27, 2024 at 03:53 pm

The cryptocurrency market experiences a slight decline, with Bitcoin attempting to break past $70,000 resistance but facing corrections. Ethereum shows similar behavior, stabilizing around $3,600 with indecisive market sentiment. Both cryptocurrencies maintain bullish trends, but traders should exercise caution in opening long positions due to recent corrections that indicate the potential for further price adjustments.

Crypto Market Cools, Bitcoin and Ethereum Face Resistance

The cryptocurrency market experienced a mild correction today, with the total market capitalization declining by 1.14% to $2.76 trillion, according to Coingecko. This minor adjustment follows significant market fluctuations over the past few days, as Bitcoin and Ethereum encountered resistance at critical levels.

Bitcoin's Uphill Battle

Bitcoin, the world's leading cryptocurrency, has been attempting to surpass the $70,000 barrier. However, this level has emerged as a formidable resistance, with breakouts often followed by corrections that ripple through the broader crypto market. Today, Bitcoin witnessed a 1.2% decrease, reaching a daily high of $71,754 before correcting to $69,793.

Despite the recent dip, Bitcoin's overall trajectory remains bullish, as it continues to recover from a flash crash on BitMEX that drove the price down to $60,760.

Technical Analysis

The daily candlestick pattern suggests a potential correction, but the overall trend remains bullish. Bitcoin is trading above its EMA10, a positive indication that investors who purchased the coin within the last 10 days should currently be in profit.

According to IntoTheBlock data, approximately 97.7% of BTC addresses are profitable. Some short-term traders may opt to realize their gains, while long-term holders may choose to maintain their positions and observe market developments.

Market indicators have also found equilibrium as a result of the recent cooldown. The relative strength index (RSI) rests at a slightly bullish 58, indicating a balanced market compared to the 72 points recorded on March 14 when Bitcoin traded at a similar price point. This may provide opportunities for safe bullish bets that incorporate market sentiment.

The average directional index (ADX) has fallen to 30, suggesting that while bullish sentiment persists, traders are exercising caution, and market rallies are not as pronounced as in recent days. If Bitcoin fails to gain momentum, it may find immediate support around $67,800, as determined by the EMA10. Conversely, if bullish momentum continues, resistance is expected between the psychological $70,000 zone and the $73,794 all-time high.

Ethereum's Trajectory

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, exhibits similarities to Bitcoin.

Currently trading at $6,543, Ethereum surged to $3,663 before correcting to a low of $3,495 today. Overall, Ethereum has declined by 1.35% in the past 24 hours.

Over the past three days, Ethereum has encountered strong resistance at $3,660, with the overall pattern indicating increased stability. This may deter scalpers and day traders from opening long positions.

Technical Analysis

Ethereum remains bullish, but the gap between the EMA10 and EMA55 is narrowing rapidly, potentially signaling an ongoing price correction. The RSI has retreated to 52, suggesting indecision in the market, with neither bulls nor bears holding clear dominance.

The ADX, which gauges trend strength, currently stands at 38. Combined with a squeeze momentum indicator, which estimates the market cycle phase of an asset, it indicates that bears are not yet conceding to a price recovery. Moreover, traders may still be struggling to recover from the correction that commenced on March 12, which caused Ethereum's price to plummet by approximately 25% from $4,095 to $3,059.

Cautious Optimism

While both Bitcoin and Ethereum face resistance at key levels, their overall trends remain bullish. However, traders contemplating long positions in the near term should exercise caution, as recent corrections possess sufficient strength to impede the coins' continued advance towards price discovery zones.

Conclusion

The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a period of consolidation, with Bitcoin and Ethereum facing resistance at critical levels. While the overall trend remains positive, traders should proceed with caution and consider the potential for further corrections. Market indicators and technical analysis provide valuable insights into market sentiment and potential trend reversals, allowing traders to make informed decisions amidst market volatility.
