Here's a snapshot of the key developments that shaped the ecosystem in 2024:
Record Fundraising and Investor Confidence
Venture capital funding in the Bitcoin ecosystem soared in 2024. A total of 78 protocols secured funding, collectively amassing a grand total of $460 million. This massive influx of capital highlights growing investor confidence in the potential of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Runes Emerge as a Dominant Force
Launched in May, Runes have quickly become the most prominent innovation on the Bitcoin mainnet, surpassing earlier developments such as BRC-20 tokens and inscriptions. Bitcoin Ordinals and Layer Expansion
Bitcoin Ordinals achieved the second-highest sales volume among all blockchains in 2024, trailing only the behemoth Ethereum. Meanwhile, the Bitcoin layers landscape also underwent a massive expansion, growing from a handful of projects to over 80 active protocols, signaling an explosion of innovation.
Staking and Derivatives Drive Utility
The introduction of native Bitcoin staking by Babylon served as a major milestone, unlocking a third major use case for Bitcoin. By the end of the year, a total of 57,288 BTC (valued at $5.8 billion) were staked across three caps. In other related news, Bitcoin derivatives also saw a 30% growth, reaching 302,000 BTC across blockchains.
