Bitcoin Correction Looms as Options Expiration Draws Near

May 17, 2024 at 02:50 pm

Amidst Bitcoin's recent surge towards $66,000, the derivatives market signals a potential short-term correction. The expiration of 18,000 Bitcoin options today, indicating a Put Call Ratio of 0.63 and a Max Pain point of $63,000, suggests a bearish sentiment among some traders. However, inflows into Bitcoin ETFs driven by the "meme wave" provide support, while the broader crypto market exhibits signs of weakness.

Bitcoin Correction Looming as Options Expiration Approaches

Amidst the recent surge in Bitcoin's price to $66,000, derivatives data suggests a potential short-term correction may be imminent. Approximately 18,000 Bitcoin options are set to expire today, according to data from Greeks.Live.

The options feature a Put Call Ratio (PCR) of 0.63, indicating a higher number of put options (bets on price decline) than call options (bets on price increase). The Max Pain point, which represents the price level at which the most options contracts expire worthless, is currently at $63,000. The total notional value of the expiring options is estimated at $1.2 billion.

While Bitcoin's price has been buoyed by inflows into Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) fueled by the recent "meme wave," broader market weakness persists. Trading volumes for altcoins have declined significantly, highlighting the divergence between Bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrency market.

Analysis of Bitcoin futures options traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) by CF Benchmarks reveals that investors are still paying a premium for short-term downside protection. This premium suggests that traders are wary of a potential decline in Bitcoin's price despite yesterday's softer U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report.

Overall, the data suggests that a correction in Bitcoin's price may occur in the near term as options expire. The extent and duration of the correction will depend on market dynamics and the sentiment among traders.
