A significant Bitcoin trader has made an interesting move in the world of cryptocurrencies.
What Happened: James.Whad, who previously had a long position on Bitcoin for $1.25 billion, has switched to a short position in the cryptocurrency. This switch comes as the market is showing a preference for the asset’s price to go down.
The trader engaged in a short deal for 1,038.7 Bitcoins, which was valued at $111.8 million at the price of $107,711.1. The data indicates that this position may be liquidated at the price of $149,000.
The change suggests that Wynn anticipates Bitcoin’s value to fall further than it already has, which is the opposite of what he predicted earlier.
The Story So Far: After making the choice to sell his $1.25 billion stake on the Hyperliquid site, where he often trades, Wynn went ahead and carried out his decision.
The trader had a long position that was valued at $110 million, which they closed in order to open the short position. This step was taken in response to the recent decline in the price of Bitcoin, which fell below $108,000.
Market data highlights the significant size of Wynn’s portfolio. His total holdings are valued at $49.4 billion, out of which $44.9 billion are perpetual futures and $6.5 million each are spot and staked assets. A short position in Bitcoin involves betting against its immediate price trend, and the 40x leverage multiplies the results of any movements.
Bitcoin Teeters Below $108K as Traders Like Wynn Bet Big on a Crash — $111M on the Line
On May 24, 2025, the highest price for the cryptocurrency was $111,827, though it struggled to climb after that. As a result of the price falling below $108,000, several traders, such as Wynn, have decided to take a pessimistic stance.
Overall, there has been a great deal of activity in the market over this time. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States received a total of $2.75 billion for the week, up from $211.7 million on May 23. At the same time, A new high of $80 billion was hit by the open interest in Bitcoin futures on that day, indicating that more individuals were trading futures.
Wynn’s actions highlight the boldness and risk involved in trading cryptocurrencies. With profit or loss depending on where Bitcoin heads, Michael Novogratz could earn an additional $111.8 million if the price continues to drop. However, given the liquidation price of $149,100, a large upward swing could lead to the position being closed prematurely, leading to losses.
