This means only the fingerprints reside on the ledger, keeping sensitive underlying numbers securely off-chain. The paper even notes this method is adaptable to other formats like XBRL.

Cost-Effective and Swift Verification

One of the most compelling aspects of this proof-of-concept is its efficiency and affordability. The authors cleverly utilized XRPL’s memo functionality, bypassing the need for smart contracts. This sidesteps potential gas fees and contract risks, a significant advantage. With XRPL’s incredibly low base fee – a mere 0.00001 XRP – anchoring these data fingerprints comes at a minimal cost, practically bordering on free, especially when batching thousands of datasets into a single ledger entry. The paper highlights XRPL’s rapid consensus finality and robust protocol as key enablers, making the verification process remarkably swift, with publishing taking three to five seconds and verification a mere one to two seconds.

This isn't the BIS's first foray into testing public blockchains; they previously explored Project Mariana for central bank digital currency settlement. However, this XRPL test is particularly noteworthy given XRPL's recent momentum in the institutional space. We’ve seen pilots linking XRPL to interbank rails with major players like JPMorgan, Mastercard, and Ondo, successfully settling tokenized Treasury bills in under five seconds. Ripple itself is pushing an institutional roadmap focused on compliance and permissioned trading, further solidifying XRPL's appeal for enterprise-grade solutions. The BIS tests were conducted on XRPL's DevNet, which closely mirrors the mainnet’s performance and fee structure, lending credibility to the findings.
