Binance’s $20 Million Transfers Raise Eyebrows

World’s Largest Crypto Exchange Binance Accused of Market Manipulation

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has come under fire after transferring approximately $20 million in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) to Wintermute, a prominent market maker. The transactions have sparked concerns among the crypto community about potential market manipulation.

According to on-chain data, Binance transferred 70.9 BTC (currently valued at $7.2 million) and 1,701 ETH ($5.38 million) to Wintermute on Monday. The following day, the exchange moved 20,973 SOL ($4.9 million) and an additional 1,000 ETH ($3.17 million) to the market maker.

These large-scale transactions quickly caught the attention of several crypto commentators and on-chain observers, who began speculating that Wintermute may be attempting to create artificial liquidity or influence market prices.

Shortly after the transactions were flagged, Whale Alert reported another massive on-chain movement, with 18,107 ETH (around $57.8 million at current prices) being shifted from an unknown wallet to Binance’s hot wallet on Monday.

Accusations Against Binance and Wintermute

Crypto commentator Marty Party, known for his outspoken commentary on the crypto industry, accused Binance of orchestrating these transactions to create misleading trading patterns.

He claimed that these patterns often lead to the liquidations of leveraged positions, which can harm retail investors. Marty urged the community to avoid panic selling and to prioritize self-custody of their assets.

“Binance orchestrates these transactions to create a misleading trading pattern, which often leads to the liquidation of leveraged positions, harming retail,” he stated. “Don’t panic sell and prioritize self-custody.”

Adding to the controversy, a crypto analyst known as Cryptoblock192.eth criticized Wintermute for exploiting order books and engaging in centralized practices.

The analyst drew parallels between Wintermute’s actions and the controversies surrounding FTX and Alameda Research, noting that such strategies contradict the principles of decentralization.

“These practices (exploiting order books) harm retail traders by manipulating prices and exploiting liquidity gaps,” the analyst said. “This is against the principles of decentralization. We need more transparency from market makers like Wintermute.”

“This issue deserves more attention,” Gravez, an outspoken user on X, added. “These exchanges are getting away with market manipulation because no one’s holding them accountable. Gravez went on to highlight the importance of decentralized exchanges.”

Despite the rising criticism, Binance and Wintermute have yet to issue any statements regarding these transactions or the market manipulation accusations.
