Binance Faces Global Regulatory Crackdown, Threatening Operations
Apr 23, 2024 at 08:14 pm
Binance faces global regulatory hurdles, including a request from the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission to remove its app from app stores due to allegations of unregistered security sales and operating as an unregistered broker. This follows similar allegations from the US SEC in 2023 and other regulatory scrutiny in Nigeria and Hong Kong, highlighting the ongoing challenges Binance faces in navigating global regulations.

Binance Faces Global Regulatory Challenges, Threatening Its Operations
Binance, the prominent cryptocurrency trading platform, has encountered a barrage of regulatory hurdles across multiple jurisdictions, jeopardizing its operations in various markets.
Philippines SEC Orders Removal of Binance App
In the Philippines, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken decisive action against Binance, requesting that Google and Apple remove the platform's app from their respective app stores. The SEC alleges that Binance operates as an unregistered broker, potentially endangering the funds of Filipino investors.
The move follows a comprehensive investigation that identified Binance's activities as a potential threat. Emilio Aquino, SEC Chair, emphasized the importance of protecting the public from potential risks. The SEC has emphasized that Binance's presence in the country without proper authorization violates the Securities Regulation Code.
U.S. SEC Suit and Securities Allegations
In June 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Binance for alleged violations of securities laws, mishandling of investor funds, and misleading investors and regulators. The SEC also designated various altcoins within and outside the Binance ecosystem as securities, including BNB, BUSD, ADA, MATIC, SOL, ATOM, MANA, AXS, COTI, SAND, FIL, and ALGO.
The Philippines SEC's current actions suggest that the exchange has been under scrutiny in the country for some time. In March 2023, the SEC attempted to block residents' access to Binance, requesting the National Telecommunication Commission to assist in blocking the website and other web pages used by the platform.
Global Regulatory Pressure
Beyond the setbacks faced in the U.S. and the Philippines, Binance is facing additional regulatory challenges worldwide. Last month, the Nigerian government forced the exchange to halt transactions after intensifying its scrutiny. Two Binance executives, Nadeem Anjarwalla and Tigran Gambaryan, were implicated in alleged money laundering activities amounting to $26 billion.
In a similar vein, Hong Kong-based crypto exchange HashKey has announced plans to cease deposits and withdrawals from wallets hosted by Binance effective May 2024. These actions reflect a growing global effort to regulate the burgeoning cryptocurrency industry and ensure compliance with applicable laws.
Binance's Response and Implications
Binance has yet to issue a comprehensive response to the latest regulatory challenges it faces. However, the company has previously stated its commitment to regulatory compliance and has implemented various measures to enhance its operations.
The current regulatory landscape poses significant challenges for Binance and other cryptocurrency exchanges. The outcome of these ongoing investigations and regulatory actions could have far-reaching implications for the entire industry, potentially impacting the future of cryptocurrency trading and investment.
