Base Soars Past Ethereum with Record-Breaking Transactions and Value
Apr 08, 2024 at 10:00 am
Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, Base, has experienced a surge in total value locked (TVL) by over 13.2%, reaching a record-breaking $4 billion. This increase surpasses that of Ethereum and its rival Arbitrum, with Base's 30-day transaction count also outperforming both. Despite facing phishing scams, Base's popularity has been fueled by recent memecoin activity, with its meme token market capitalization exceeding $1.6 billion.

Base Surges to New Heights, Outpacing Ethereum in Transactions and TVL
Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, Base, has witnessed an unprecedented surge in activity and value, surpassing $4 billion in total value locked (TVL) for the first time. In a remarkable display of growth, Base has eclipsed its rivals, including Ethereum and Arbitrum, in terms of transaction volume and TVL.
According to the latest data from L2BEAT, Base's TVL has soared by over 13.2% in the past week, reaching an impressive $4.15 billion. This surge is attributed to a combination of canonically bridged assets ($1.45 billion) and natively minted assets ($2.7 billion).
Base has emerged as the third-largest Ethereum layer 2 by TVL, leaving behind its closest competitor, Blast, by a substantial margin of $1.4 billion. While Arbitrum retains its dominance with a TVL of $14.6 billion, Base has narrowed the gap with Optimism, holding $3.5 billion.
Notably, Base is the only layer 2 among the top 5 to have experienced a positive growth trajectory over the past week. In contrast, Starknet and Optimism have seen their TVL decline by 10.2% and 9.1%, respectively, while Arbitrum and Blast have both registered losses.
Base's meteoric rise is further evident in its transaction count, which stands at a staggering 50.34 million over the past 30 days. This figure outpaces both Arbitrum's 40.1 million and Ethereum's 37.9 million transactions.
On a daily basis, Base's average transactions per second (TPS) have also surged by an impressive 29.7% over the past week. With an average of 35.19 TPS, Base has outperformed the combined TPS of Arbitrum and Ethereum, which stand at 16.61 and 13.91, respectively.
Base's popularity has even extended to the memecoin market, where its community token has achieved a market capitalization of over $1.6 billion, marking a significant 13% increase over the past day.
However, the network's success has not come without its challenges. Phishing scams have seen an alarming 18-fold increase since January, leading to the loss of $3.35 million in March alone.
Ethereum, meanwhile, has shifted its focus to enhancing its capacity to handle layer-2 transaction data. The recent Dencun update has reduced layer-2 transaction fees, paving the way for further growth in the layer-2 ecosystem.
Analysts at VanEck predict that the scaling ecosystem for Ethereum could reach a colossal $1 trillion market capitalization by 2030, indicating the immense potential for layer-2 solutions like Base.
In conclusion, Coinbase's Base has emerged as a formidable force in the Ethereum layer-2 landscape. Its remarkable growth in TVL, transaction count, and TPS, coupled with the potential for further adoption, positions it as a key player in the rapidly evolving world of blockchain technology.
