Base is Rapidly Evolving into a Major Player in Ethereum’s Layer-2 Space
Mar 12, 2025 at 12:00 am
Backed by Coinbase, the network is rolling out crucial upgrades aimed at making blockchain applications more accessible to mainstream users.

Base, the Layer-2 scaling solution backed by Coinbase, is rapidly becoming a major player in Ethereum’s ecosystem, according to a new report by Nansen.
Known for its low fees and high throughput, Base is quickly gaining traction among developers and users. As of August, it boasted the highest developer activity among all Layer-2s, with 232 projects deployed on the network in the past 30 days.
It's also seeing consistent growth in daily active users, again outperforming other Layer-2s.
Among the most notable innovations highlighted by Nansen is Flashblocks, a technology that enables near-instantaneous block confirmation times of 200 milliseconds, making it potentially the fastest EVM-compatible chain.
In comparison, Bitcoin boasts an average block time of 10 minutes, while Ethereum has around 12 seconds.
At the same time, Base Appchains are allowing projects like Blackbird's restaurant loyalty system and Farcade AI's gaming ecosystem to build high-performance Layer-3 networks with full control over their configurations and data.
Moreover, Base is introducing improvements to smart wallets, focusing on better usability with intuitive interfaces and programmable spending limits.
On the financial side, Base is now second only to Arbitrum in terms of total value locked (TVL), and when excluding Arbitrum’s Hyperliquid, it would claim the top position.
This strong performance comes amid a more favorable regulatory climate, with the SEC dropping its case against Coinbase and a more crypto-friendly environment emerging in the U.S., which could further accelerate adoption.
Overall, Base is well-positioned for continued growth in the Layer-2 space.
