Base Network, Coinbase's Layer-2 Solution, Soars to Record Trading Volumes on Uniswap

Apr 15, 2024 at 02:53 pm

Base Network, Coinbase's Layer-2 scaling solution, is poised to break its trading volume record with $9.4 billion on Uniswap. Base has surpassed monthly trading volume records since January, prompting Coinbase to announce plans to implement USDC balance on the network. Despite recent network congestion, Base's total value locked has risen to $3.89 billion, outperforming Arbitrum and Ethereum in daily transactions, signaling resilience and growth potential.

Base Network, Coinbase's Layer-2 Solution, Surges to Record Trading Volumes on Uniswap, Poised to Eclipse Previous Highs

New York, United States [April 2023] - Base Network, the highly anticipated Layer-2 scaling solution developed by cryptocurrency giant Coinbase, is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone, poised to surpass its all-time high in trading volumes on the decentralized exchange, Uniswap.

According to data from Uniswap Labs, Base has consistently shattered its monthly trading volume records since its inception earlier this year. In January, the platform recorded volumes of $329 million, which surged to $675 million in February. March, however, witnessed an extraordinary leap, with trading volumes skyrocketing to an unprecedented $9.4 billion, demonstrating the growing traction and user adoption of Base.

The surge in trading activity on Uniswap coincides with Coinbase's strategic announcement to migrate its users' USDC balances to the Base network. This move is part of Coinbase's broader strategy to enhance the security and accessibility of customer funds.

"We are committed to providing our users with the best possible experience," said Max Branzburg, Vice President and Head of Consumer Products at Coinbase. "By migrating to Base, we can offer lower fees, faster settlement times, and additional features that will further simplify fund management and protection."

As of mid-April, Base has already accumulated a staggering $7.8 billion in trading volume, according to Uniswap Labs data. With the month still in its early stages, it is highly likely that April's trading volume record will significantly exceed that of March.

Base Outperforms Peers in Ethereum L2 Ecosystem

Base's performance has been exceptional compared to other protocols within the Ethereum Layer-2 community. Recent data from Coingape reveals that Base has surpassed both Arbitrum and Ethereum in terms of daily transaction count.

L2Beat metrics indicate that Base's 30-day transaction count has reached 45.21 million, eclipsing Arbitrum One and Ethereum. Furthermore, Base's total value locked (TVL) has surged to $3.89 billion, showcasing its resilience and promising prospects for the future.

Despite experiencing some network congestion recently, Base has demonstrated remarkable stability and is well-positioned for continued growth.

Uniswap Draws Regulatory Scrutiny, Challenging SEC Guidelines

In a parallel development, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States has recently targeted Uniswap with legal action, challenging years of established policy guidelines.

Adam Cochran of Cinneamhain Ventures, in a comprehensive legal analysis, examines several previous SEC decisions regarding the definition of "exchange" and their potential impact on Uniswap's legal battle.

Cochran argues that the SEC's recent actions deviate from its own established precedent. In 1986, 1991, and 1997, the SEC issued "No-Action Letters" that provided guidance on electronic routing and matching of trades. These decisions implied that computer service systems, like those employed by Uniswap, did not constitute complete "exchanges."

Additionally, Cochran highlights precedents that contradict the SEC's current position, such as the classification of front-ends as exchanges. The SEC has previously maintained that an interface that displays and communicates with an exchange is not an exchange in itself.

Uniswap, a decentralized exchange platform, automates token trading on Ethereum, removing the need for traditional intermediaries. While Uniswap Labs has been under regulatory oversight since 2021, it recently received a Wells notice from the SEC, signaling imminent enforcement action.

Uniswap Labs has emphasized the distinction between the app's front-end, which it develops, and the Uniswap protocol itself. Cochran supports this distinction, arguing that the front-end and the smart contract are separate components in cryptocurrency trading.

The SEC's regulatory scrutiny of Uniswap has ignited a debate on the classification of decentralized cryptocurrency exchange platforms. The outcome of the Uniswap case has the potential to shape the future of cryptocurrency trading and regulatory oversight in the digital asset space.
