Base L2 Mainnet Is About to Add Fault Proofs, Helping to Decentralize the Chain
Oct 25, 2024 at 03:29 pm
Base's L2 mainnet is about to add fault proofs. This will help to further decentralize the chain. It allows anyone to challenge transactions.

Base L2 Mainnet to Get Fault Proofs, Here’s What They Do
Decentralization is a key focus for the crypto sector, and having a chain be 100% decentralized from the get-go isn’t always the case. For example, Base’s L2 mainnet is still centralized, but the team has been working on having it be more decentralized. One way they did this was by implementing fault proofs. So, what are the fault proofs on Base mainnet? We are going to take a closer look at them.
What Are the Fault Proofs on Base Mainnet?
The fault proofs on the Base mainnet achieve several aspects of decentralization, such as for validation and to engage the community more. The fault proofs have two key features.
Anyone can withdraw funds from Base L2 to L1, and anyone can monitor and permissionlessly challenge invalid withdrawals, which removes the need for a trusted third party.
The Base team collaborated on this aspect with Optimism, which has fault proofs as part of their OP stack and has implemented them on their mainnet since June.
Now, withdrawing funds from their L2 to L1 always has a seven-day challenge period, which doesn’t change during or after the implementation. However, this seven-day period can now be extended beyond seven days if a transaction gets challenged. See the image below.

Coinbase’s L2 is Base, and when we talk about the L1, that is Ethereum. Once all L1 smart contracts get upgraded, it’s done atomically, which means the upgrade happens in one single transaction.
