Base Emerges as Major Player in Ethereum Layer 2 Ecosystem
Apr 25, 2024 at 12:05 am
As Bitcoin celebrates its 15th anniversary, the crypto industry is poised to transition from early adoption to mainstream acceptance. One significant driver of this growth is Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 developed by Coinbase, which has emerged as a frontrunner with impressive growth. Base's success can be attributed to its use of ETH for gas, OP for governance, and AEVO as an incentive token through its vote escrow mechanism. The ecosystem fund acquires AERO to incentivize projects that lock up AERO, leading to liquidity growth. Native projects like Aerodrome, Moonwell, and Degen have garnered significant market share, with Aerodrome generating fees comparable to Uniswap across multiple chains. Base's strong community and Coinbase's support position it as a leading player in driving blockchain technology towards widespread adoption.

Base Emerges as a Frontrunner in Ethereum Layer 2 Landscape
As the cryptocurrency industry prepares to mark the 15th anniversary of Bitcoin in 2024, the development of blockchain technology and its potential for mass adoption have reached a critical juncture, akin to the transformative shift witnessed in the early days of the internet in the 1990s. Industry experts believe that the widespread acceptance of cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based applications will hinge upon the ability of these technologies to attract and retain a significant user base.
In this regard, Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 solution developed by leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, has emerged as a frontrunner with impressive growth this year. As an L2 protocol, Base aims to address scalability and cost concerns associated with the Ethereum mainnet by processing transactions off-chain and leveraging the security of Ethereum.
Driving Factors of Base's Success
Despite lacking its own native token, Base has gained significant traction by utilizing a combination of existing cryptocurrencies for various functions within its ecosystem. ETH is primarily used for gas fees, while OP is employed for governance purposes. The governance token for the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) on Base, Aerodrome, is AEVO. Notably, the Base ecosystem fund has been actively acquiring AEVO and distributing it as incentives to projects, incentivizing them to lock up AEVO and contribute to the ecosystem's liquidity.
The Base ecosystem has witnessed notable growth in native projects, which now command a substantial market share. Aerodrome, the leading DEX on Base in terms of total value locked (TVL), has generated an impressive amount of fees, nearly matching those of Uniswap, a leading DEX deployed across multiple chains.
Another key player in the Base ecosystem is Moonwell, the dominant borrowing and lending protocol. Moonwell boasts a TVL that rivals the combined TVL of AAVE and Compound on Base. Additionally, Moonwell has experienced a remarkable surge in users, with a 4x increase since the beginning of the year. Through its partnership with Circle's USDC Anywhere program, Moonwell can access USDC stored on any chain supported by Circle, expanding its reach beyond the USDC held on Coinbase.
Degen, initially launched as a meme token, has evolved into the de facto in-app currency for Farcaster, a decentralized social media platform. Degen has witnessed a five-fold increase in users within a month, surpassing the record set by BONK, the popular meme coin on the Solana blockchain.
The rapid development of the Base ecosystem and community, coupled with Coinbase's unwavering support, has positioned Base as a leading contender in the Ethereum Layer 2 landscape. Its innovative tokenomics model, vibrant project development, and growing user base suggest that Base will continue to play a pivotal role in bringing blockchain technology to the mainstream.
