Band Protocol Launches BandChain 2, Revolutionizing Blockchain Interoperability and Decentralization
May 04, 2024 at 09:02 pm
Band Protocol, a leading blockchain data provider, has launched BandChain 2, its next-generation platform. BandChain 2 allows data providers to run nodes directly, enhancing transparency and decentralization. This aligns with the company's vision of cross-chain compatibility and supporting faster and cheaper blockchains like Solana and Cosmos. Band Protocol has partnered with industry giants like Google, Microsoft, and Bloomberg to provide premium APIs and enable traditional players to monetize their data. Despite being smaller than Chainlink, Band Protocol has made significant progress in attracting data partners, becoming the first blockchain project to join the OpenAPI Initiative.

Band Protocol Unveils BandChain 2, Revolutionizing Blockchain Interoperability and Decentralization
Band Protocol, the second-largest blockchain data provider after market leader Chainlink, has announced the highly anticipated launch of BandChain 2, its next-generation blockchain oracle infrastructure.
Blockchain oracles, such as Band Protocol, serve as bridges between the real world and smart contracts, enabling the incorporation of external information and data into blockchain applications. This plays a crucial role in powering decentralized finance (DeFi), insurance, and other cutting-edge blockchain-based solutions that rely on reliable and verifiable data.
Recognizing the limitations of Ethereum, the dominant platform for DeFi, Band Protocol opted to build its foundation upon Cosmos blockchain software. Cosmos, renowned for its cross-chain interoperability capabilities, allows Band Protocol to seamlessly connect and communicate with various blockchain networks, offering developers greater flexibility and scalability.
As Ethereum confronted challenges with network congestion and high transaction fees, Band Protocol CEO Soravis Srinawakoon remained steadfast in his belief that the future of blockchain would embrace interoperability.
"Our early decision to prioritize cross-chain compatibility stemmed from our conviction that multiple blockchains, each with distinct designs and trade-offs, would emerge," Srinawakoon explained. "The emergence of high-performance networks like Solana, Cosmos, Polkadot, BSC, and Terra underscores the validity of this approach."
BandChain 2 marks a significant milestone in Band Protocol's evolution, introducing a transformative shift towards decentralization and transparency. The protocol now empowers data providers to operate their own nodes, eliminating the reliance on intermediaries for data acquisition. This paradigm shift aligns with the industry-wide trend towards greater decentralization, as evidenced by initiatives such as API3's adoption of a similar model.
According to Srinawakoon, the enhanced transparency and decentralized nature of BandChain 2 are intended to attract more traditional players into the blockchain ecosystem. These established entities possess valuable data that can be monetized through the provision of premium APIs, supplementing the existing data ecosystem.
Despite its considerable size, Band Protocol remains a significant player in the blockchain data oracle market, second only to Chainlink. Notably, Band Protocol holds the distinction of being the first blockchain project to join the OpenAPI Initiative, a collaboration involving prominent organizations such as Google, Microsoft, and Bloomberg.
Srinawakoon emphasized that fostering collaboration with traditional players remains a key challenge. "Convincing these firms to adopt a more transparent and decentralized approach is an arduous task," he acknowledged. "Our strategy revolves around streamlining the onboarding process, minimizing disruption to their existing infrastructure, and ensuring seamless integration."
The launch of BandChain 2 represents a major leap forward for Band Protocol, solidifying its position as a leading provider of blockchain data oracle services. The protocol's unwavering commitment to interoperability, transparency, and decentralization positions it as a driving force in the ongoing evolution and adoption of blockchain technology.
