Avail DA Mainnet & the AVAIL token are now live!
Jul 23, 2024 at 07:10 pm
Today marks the launch of Avail DA, the first modular data availability layer using validity proofs + data availability sampling.

Modular blockchain Avail has finally launched its mainnet after raising $75 million in funding earlier this year. The launch is accompanied by the introduction of the AVAIL token, which plays a pivotal role within Avail's ecosystem.

According to a recent tweet from Avail, the launch of Avail DA Mainnet and the AVAIL token marks a significant milestone in the project's journey. Avail DA is notably the first modular data availability layer that utilizes validity proofs in conjunction with data availability sampling.
The launch enables the construction of blockchains that can truly scale in response to demand. Furthermore, the AVAIL token powers the network, facilitating payment of fees, participation in network staking and utilization of data availability.
As per Avail's tokenomics, the total supply of AVAIL is capped at 10 billion tokens. Notably, an airdrop of 600 million AVAIL tokens was conducted by Avail in April. The airdrop included various participants such as blockchain developers, testnet contributors, and stakers on the Polygon PoS chain. The airdrop will become claimable upon the launch of the Avail DA layer.
Avail modular blockchain designed to address key blockchain issues
Avail is primarily designed to address two crucial issues within the blockchain domain: fragmentation and scalability. The project's data availability layer, known as Avail DA, is meticulously engineered to efficiently store and manage the vast amounts of transactional data generated by blockchains, particularly layer-2 solutions on Ethereum.
At the core of Avail's technology is its utilization of KZG commitments and data availability sampling (DAS). These technologies collectively enable Avail to offer advanced data availability infrastructure, addressing critical challenges in the blockchain ecosystem.
Avail combines KZG commitments, which provide cryptographic assurances of data integrity, with DAS to ensure that data can be quickly and reliably sampled by lightweight clients. This capability is particularly crucial for scaling rollups on Ethereum.

In terms of consensus, Avail employs a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism, which is designed to prevent centralization and ensure an equitable distribution of staked tokens among validators. Initially, Avail aims to onboard 1,000 validators, with the potential to expand to 10,000 as the network grows.
The NPoS system is complemented by Avail's light clients, which use validity proofs and data availability sampling to efficiently verify data on consumer-grade hardware like mobile phones. This setup enables fast verification of data immediately after block finalization, helping to maintain network security and efficiency.

Avail enters a competitive field of data availability solutions, which currently includes Celestia, NEAR Protocol's Nuffle Labs and others. However, Avail claims to be the only chain-agnostic data availability layer with KZG commitments and sampling data availability. This combination, according to Avail, provides unique advantages for rollups.
The launch of Avail marks the beginning of a broader vision that includes two additional major components: the interoperability layer Nexus and the security network layer Fusion. These upcoming releases are expected to further enhance Avail’s capabilities and impact on the blockchain ecosystem.
By providing robust data availability infrastructure, Avail aims to support the scaling of decentralized blockchains, enabling developers to build and deploy rollups and other blockchain solutions more efficiently. Its chain-agnostic approach means it can support various execution environments and rollup constructs, broadening its applicability across different blockchain networks.
