The crypto industry faced a significant blow in August, with hackers stealing a staggering $313.86 million in digital assets through over 10 cyberattacks.

Cryptocurrency experienced a setback in August as hackers made away with a total of $313.86 million in digital assets across 10 cyberattacks, highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities in the crypto space.
Blockchain security firm PeckShield noted that phishing attacks were largely responsible for the devastating losses, accounting for 93.5% of the total stolen funds, which amounted to $293.4 million. Of the month’s top five hacks, two phishing incidents stood out, with the theft of $238 million in Bitcoin (BTC) and $55.4 million in Dai (DAI).
Other notable breaches included the Ronin Network exploit, where the platform recovered $12 million from the hacker but still encountered unauthorized transactions worth $5.1 million. Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Nexera also lost $1.83 million due to a smart contract exploit, underscoring the ongoing risks in the DeFi sector.
These August attacks contribute to the broader cyber threat landscape that has plagued the cryptocurrency industry in 2024. A report by Immunefi, released on August 29, revealed that the industry has seen $1.21 billion in digital assets lost to hacks and rug pulls year-to-date.
This concerning trend not only highlights the need for more robust security measures but also poses a significant challenge to the credibility and trustworthiness of the crypto ecosystem.
In related news, July saw one of the largest cyberattacks of 2024 when India’s WazirX crypto exchange had $234.9 million siphoned from one of its multisig wallets. The exchange is currently undertaking a phased plan to restore its financial operations and has taken steps in Singapore as part of its restructuring efforts.
To combat these growing threats, a team of ethical hackers has formed an elite unit known as the Security Alliance (SEAL), which is led by white hat hacker and Paradigm researcher Samczsun. Since its launch in August 2023, SEAL has received over 900 hack-related tickets, aiming to bolster defenses and prevent breaches within the industry.
However, the road to recovery remains challenging, with Immunefi reporting that nearly 80% of cryptocurrencies never regain their value after a hack or exploit, with the loss in value often causing more damage to projects than the initial breach itself. As the industry grapples with these persistent challenges, the importance of robust security protocols and proactive measures has never been more critical.
