ASX Expects Spot Bitcoin ETFs to Secure Approval by 2024

May 03, 2024 at 07:18 pm

Australia's largest stock exchange, the ASX, is expected to approve several spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the end of 2024. VanEck Australia and BetaShares are actively pursuing approval for their spot Bitcoin ETFs, mirroring similar developments in the US and Hong Kong. Industry experts anticipate these ETFs to attract substantial inflows, citing the success of US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs which have amassed over $53 billion in assets under management.

Australian Securities Exchange Anticipates Approval of Spot Bitcoin ETFs by 2024

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), Australia's primary stock exchange, is poised to authorize the establishment of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) before the end of 2024. This move aligns with recent trends observed in the United States and Hong Kong, where similar products have gained significant traction.

VanEck Australia and BetaShares, a domestic ETF-focused fund manager, are anticipated to receive approval for their spot Bitcoin ETF applications by year's end, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. This development mirrors the surge in spot Bitcoin ETF applications in the United States, where eleven products have collectively amassed an impressive $53 billion in assets under management (AUM).

Industry experts attribute the surge in demand for spot Bitcoin ETFs to the substantial inflows witnessed in U.S.-based counterparts. Justin Arzadon, head of digital at BetaShares, emphasized the enduring presence of digital assets, as evidenced by the inflows into U.S. ETFs.

Jeff Yew, CEO of Monochrome, a crypto asset management firm pursuing a competing exchange application, characterized Australia as a "crypto-heavy" nation. He projects that Australian spot Bitcoin ETFs could attract $3 billion to $4 billion in net inflows within their first three years of operation.

Yew highlighted the substantial demand for Bitcoin ETFs among fund managers seeking Bitcoin exposure, self-managed super fund (SMSF) investors, and retail investors. Currently, SMSF investors directly access Bitcoin through crypto exchanges, a practice that Yew deems inherently risky and akin to a "ticking time bomb" due to potential exchange vulnerabilities.

Bitcoin ETFs, on the other hand, provide regulatory oversight and enhanced security, ensuring a stark contrast with direct crypto exchange exposure. Monochrome initially submitted an application for a spot Bitcoin ETF to the ASX on July 14, 2023, but subsequently transitioned to Cboe Australia due to the ASX's protracted approval process.

Yew cited Cboe Australia's more pragmatic timeline and transparent listing framework as motivations for the switch, acknowledging the challenges the ASX has faced with regulatory matters and its limited appetite for product innovation. Despite the setback, Yew remains optimistic about Cboe Australia approving Monochrome's application "within the next few weeks."

The imminent introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs on the ASX is widely anticipated to revolutionize the accessibility and legitimacy of digital assets in Australia. These products provide investors with a regulated and convenient method to gain exposure to Bitcoin, fostering greater mainstream adoption and broadening the cryptocurrency's reach within the financial ecosystem.
