ARKB Bitcoin ETF Sees Record Outflow, Outpacing Grayscale Trust

Apr 03, 2024 at 03:15 pm

ARK Invest's ARKB Bitcoin ETF experienced a record outflow of $87 million on April 2, surpassing Grayscale's GBTC for the first time, losing around 1,300 BTC. GBTC also saw outflows of $81.9 million, lower than its recent average. Despite the outflows, BlackRock's fund received a $150.5 million inflow, resulting in a net aggregate inflow of $40.3 million for the day. The outflows come amidst a 9% decline in Bitcoin's price from last week's high and increased activity in Bitcoin ETFs, with ProShares launching 2x and -2x leveraged spot Bitcoin ETFs.

ARKB Bitcoin ETF Sees Record Outflow, Outpacing Grayscale Trust

ARK 21 Shares Bitcoin ETF Experiences Unprecedented Outflow, Surpassing Grayscale's Trust

On April 2nd, ARK 21 Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), an American investment management firm, witnessed a significant daily outflow of $87 million, marking the first instance since the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States that it has surpassed Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). This outflow represents approximately 1,300 BTC.

Outflow Comparison and Market Dynamics

ARKB's outflow was preceded by a loss of $300,000 on April 1st, marking its first-ever day of outflow. In contrast, GBTC experienced an outflow of $81.9 million, a figure lower than its recent daily average of $254 million. Over the past three months, Grayscale has recorded a loss of $15.1 billion.

Despite these outflows, BlackRock's fund received an inflow of $150.5 million, resulting in a net aggregate inflow of $40.3 million for the day. ARKB remains the third-largest spot ETF among recently launched products, with $2.2 billion in assets under management (AUM), trailing only BlackRock and Fidelity.

BTC Holdings and Price Volatility

ARKB currently holds 44,662 BTC, positioning it as the sixth-largest BTC holder among funds and miners. However, GBTC retains its dominance in terms of total Bitcoin held, with an approximate 329,000 BTC under its custody.

The price of Bitcoin has experienced a downturn, declining by 9% from its peak last week to reach approximately $66,041 amid these increasing ETF outflows. The launch of the first 2x and -2x leveraged spot Bitcoin ETFs (BITU and SBIT) by ProShares has contributed to the growing activity in Bitcoin ETFs, which traded around $111 billion in volume in March alone.

Ongoing ETF Trends and Future Implications

The recent outflow from ARKB and the continued outflows from GBTC raise questions about the long-term viability of Bitcoin ETFs as investment vehicles. While BlackRock's inflow provides a positive counterpoint, it remains to be seen if these trends will persist or reverse in the future.

Analysts will be closely monitoring the performance of these ETFs in the coming weeks and months to gain insights into the evolving landscape of digital asset investment and the role that spot ETFs will play in shaping it.
