After Four Arduous Years, Ripple Emerges Victorious from Its Clash with the SEC
Mar 26, 2025 at 01:01 pm
Despite this resolution, the outcome sends ripples beyond the courtroom, hinting at a shifting landscape for the broader crypto industry

After four years of legal battles, Ripple has finally reached a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Both parties have agreed to drop their respective appeals, bringing to a close one of the most talked-about cases in the cryptocurrency world.
While the outcome is a victory for Ripple, it remains to be seen what impact this will have on the broader crypto industry and on Ripple’s XRP token, which has seen limited market movement in immediate response.
The saga began in 2019 when the SEC sued Ripple for selling unregistered securities in the form of XRP to raise $1.3 billion from investors. However, in July, the court ruled that a portion of XRP sales by Ripple executives on major exchanges constituted securities offerings, requiring registration with the SEC.
The SEC’s claim that all XRP sales by Ripple were securities was shot down by the judge, who also ruled that the crypto community's "fair notice" defense to the SEC’s actions was not applicable in this case.
Despite this setback, the SEC is still holding onto $50 million of the initially imposed $125 million fine on Ripple in an interest-bearing escrow.
This settlement, which is subject to approval by both the SEC and the court, will prevent any admission of guilt from either party.
“We are pleased that the SEC has agreed to drop its appeal and brings this litigation to an end,” said Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple’s CEO. “This is a decisive win for Ripple and for the broader crypto industry.”
Garlinghouse’s statement highlights the broader implications of this case, which has been closely watched by cryptocurrency enthusiasts and industry leaders alike.
The case underscores the importance of perseverance in regulatory matters within the crypto space.
While Ripple’s legal battle with the SEC has finally reached its conclusion, the case could have wider implications for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole.
The judge’s ruling in July, which shot down the SEC’s claims that all XRP sales were securities, might lead to more nuanced and tailored regulations for the crypto sector.
However, immediate market reactions to this development suggest that the anticipation of a major price rally might have already been priced in, leading to a relatively calm response from XRP’s market activity.

The case also saw the crypto community’s “fair notice” defense to the SEC’s actions shot down by the judge, and it remains to be seen how this will affect future cases.
This case could inspire new, clearer guidelines that balance innovation with investor protection.
"The crypto industry will benefit from clear rules of the road that promote innovation and protect investors," said Stuart Alderoty, Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer. "We hope that today’s agreement will serve as a catalyst for Congress to write legislation providing certainty and clarity for the entire industry."
With this litigation now concluded, we can move forward on expanding access to the global financial system and continue to build the metaverse together.
