Animoca Brands Navigates Evolving NFT and Metaverse Terrain

Apr 12, 2024 at 11:57 pm

Despite Bitcoin reaching an all-time high in March, the NFT market declined significantly, with monthly earnings dropping from $6 billion in January to $1.4 billion. Animoca Brands Chairman Yat Siu remains optimistic, predicting a surge in NFT market revenue driven by gaming and the metaverse.

Navigating the Evolving Landscape of NFTs and the Metaverse: Insights from Animoca Brands

In the aftermath of Bitcoin's record-breaking surge in March 2022, the non-fungible token (NFT) market experienced a significant downturn. Monthly revenue volumes plummeted from a peak of approximately $6 billion in January 2022 to around $1.4 billion, according to data from CryptoSlam.

Despite this setback, Yat Siu, co-founder and chairman of Animoca Brands, remains unwavering in his belief in the long-term viability of NFTs and the metaverse. In an interview with Decrypt during Paris Blockchain Week, Siu expressed his conviction that the NFT market is poised for a resurgence, with revenue volumes projected to rise significantly.

"I think it's going to go up," he said regarding the annual revenue of the NFT market. Siu believes that gaming will play a crucial role in driving the growth of NFTs, as it has the potential to attract large numbers of users from Web2 to Web3.

"Gaming as an ecosystem is really probably one of the best when it comes to creating more mass adoption, as you switch people from Web2 to Web3," he added.

At Paris Blockchain Week, Siu discussed various aspects of the Web3 and crypto industry, including the regulatory scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Animoca Brands' financial performance, and projections for the current year.

SEC Scrutiny and Crypto Flight

Animoca Brands is headquartered in Hong Kong and incorporated in Australia, which means it is not subject to U.S. jurisdiction. However, the SEC has nevertheless shown interest in the company's activities. In lawsuits filed against Binance and Coinbase in June 2023, the SEC alleged that SAND, the token that powers the metaverse game The Sandbox, was a security.

Animoca Brands owns The Sandbox, and Siu revealed to Decrypt that the SEC has not yet contacted the company regarding its token, either before or after the lawsuits were filed. This is noteworthy given that the SEC's case against Coinbase hinges on whether SAND and other specified cryptocurrencies constitute unregistered securities.

"Our industry standpoint is that we feel the SEC is very aggressive," Siu said.

He expressed concern that the U.S.'s aggressive regulatory approach could hinder its leadership in Web3 innovation. "Everyone wants to move to the Bay Area [home to Silicon Valley]," he said. "And for our industry, people are looking to leave."

Valuations Down, Token Prices Up

The crypto market experienced a significant decline in 2023, and Animoca Brands was not immune to this downturn. Siu reported that valuations for the portfolio of companies Animoca has invested in were lower in 2023 compared to 2022.

However, Siu noted that the value of Animoca's token holdings has increased, particularly since early 2024. He anticipates that the equity valuations will eventually follow suit.

Animoca Brands was previously publicly traded in Australia, and although a significant number of public shareholders still hold equity in the company, it is no longer required to release regular financial reports. Nevertheless, Siu revealed that the combined value of its revenue, cryptocurrencies, and token reserves declined from $2.26 billion in December 2022 to $2.1 billion in November 2023.

Optimism Amidst Uncertainty

Despite these financial fluctuations, Siu exuded a sense of optimism. Throughout the interview with Decrypt, he sipped on a sugar-free Red Bull and expressed his belief that Web3 has the potential to attract millions of users.

"Hundreds of millions and billions more people are likely to be part of Web3," he said.

Animoca Brands is at the forefront of the Web3 revolution, and Siu's insights provide valuable perspective on the evolving landscape of NFTs, gaming, and the metaverse.
