Andre Cronje Challenges Binance Fee Allegations, Highlights Coinbase Request
Nov 04, 2024 at 04:00 pm
Simon, the CEO of Moonrock Capital, recently started conversations in the crypto community when he disclosed that a Tier 1 project got a request from Binance for listing

Moonrock Capital CEO Simon sparked discussions in the crypto community after alleging that a Tier 1 project received a request from Binance for a listing, but with a major condition: contributing 15% of the entire token supply.
This claim garnered quick attention and brought forth discussions regarding the transparency of listing policies at major exchanges. On the other thread, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted their procedure, stating that Coinbase does not collect fees for listing coins.
However, a twist arose when Andre Cronje, co-founder of Sonic Labs, refuted Simon's assertions, stating that Binance did not charge his project any fees. Cronje went on to highlight a key point: Coinbase recently asked for $60 million, possibly in relation to the FTM coin.
Binance charged us $0.
Coinbase has asked us for; $300m, $50m, $30m, and more recently $60m.
Lots of respect. But this is simply not true.
— Andre Cronje (@AndreCronjeTech) November 3, 2024
The contrasting narratives from different industry leaders showcase the complexity and sometimes opaque nature of crypto exchange listing processes. Binance is known for its rigorous screening procedure that evaluates legal, compliance, and technical requirements.
While Binance maintains that their listing process is based on the merit and viability of a project, reports like Simon's raise questions about possible hidden requirements associated with listing on the platform.
At the same time, Coinbase's token listing approach is coming under scrutiny. Armstrong's assertion that Coinbase does not charge fees directly contradicts Cronje's statement regarding the large sum being requested by the exchange for the FTM token.
These assertions highlight the complex and often opaque nature of the agreements that might take place behind closed doors, even as public statements may paint a different picture.
Transparency Issues Persist in Crypto Exchange Listings
The disparity between official announcements and documented experiences exposes an industry still grappling with uniformity and openness.
Binance is perceived to be leveraging its massive user base and competitive programs like Launchpool to attract projects, but this report suggests that major concessions may be being demanded behind the scenes. Cronje's statement now places Coinbase—known for its rigorous evaluation standards and transparent approach to operations—under closer examination, especially considering their statement on not requesting listing fees.
For crypto projects hoping to secure listings on major exchanges, these dynamics are crucial. Each platform's policies and unofficial practices can heavily influence project plans. The disparities in these experiences highlight how practical application can vary drastically despite exchanges emphasizing open policies.
On a separate note, CNF earlier covered Binance's innovative initiative with the launch of Binance Financial, which provides financial advisors with tailored solutions for high-net-worth clients in the digital asset space.
Binance Wealth provides conventional wealth advisors with safe and reliable access to crypto markets, engaging them with VIP services and a diverse range of token options.
