America's Edge: Decentralized Infrastructure and the AI Competition

Jul 15, 2025 at 09:57 pm

To win the AI race, America must prioritize decentralized infrastructure. It's about freedom, transparency, and trust, not surveillance.

America's Edge: Decentralized Infrastructure and the AI Competition

The U.S. leads in AI for now, but China is catching up. To maintain its edge, America must prioritize decentralized infrastructure, focusing on freedom, transparency, and trust.

The AI Bedrock: Infrastructure Matters

AI is transforming civilization, reshaping how we work and live. Every major institution will soon integrate AI, raising the stakes for the infrastructure that supports it. But current infrastructure isn't keeping pace. In 2024, U.S. data centers used ~200 terawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power Thailand for a year. By 2028, AI power usage could reach 165-326 terawatt-hours annually, powering up to 22% of U.S. households. This demand strains our power grid and limits AI's potential.

The China Challenge

China's AI push is well-funded and strategic. Their DeepSeek model R1 rivals top-tier U.S. models, proving that speed and efficiency can shift the global AI balance. It won't matter who has the best algorithms if the U.S. neglects infrastructure.

Why Decentralization is Key

Massive, centralized data centers are obsolete. They're rigid, expensive, and create single points of failure. Decentralized systems, on the other hand, free our potential. Smaller compute clusters can run near localized renewable energy sources or tap into underutilized compute power in homes and communities. Decentralization also enhances resilience against cyberattacks, ensuring continuity in times of crisis.

The Path Forward: Incentivize and Innovate

We need to incentivize distributed infrastructure, making it easier and more profitable to build beyond hyperscale facilities. Federal research and development should focus on distributed computing. Open up federal land and institutions for edge computing powered by local clean energy. Streamline support for next-generation energy sources like advanced nuclear grids.

Leveling the Playing Field

These policies would level the field for smaller players, allowing them to build and deploy advanced AI models without relying on Big Tech. Decentralizing opportunity itself.

The Values at Stake

Whoever controls the foundation of AI determines its values. We can let foreign powers consolidate that foundation, entrenching centralization and surveillance. Or we can leverage America’s edge, developing infrastructure that guarantees resilience, transparency, and freedom.

Lightchain AI: A Glimpse into the Future

Projects like Lightchain AI, with its AI-powered Layer 1 blockchain, showcase the potential of decentralized infrastructure. The successful presale and focus on developer incentives signal a move towards broader adoption and lasting market impact.

Ethereum's Role in the Decentralized Ecosystem

Bank of America recognizes Ethereum's significant role in the stablecoin ecosystem, hosting over 50% of stablecoins. This highlights Ethereum's robust infrastructure and strategic importance in digital finance, paving the way for mainstream financial acceptance of digital assets. Clear regulations will further boost Ethereum's utility, encouraging broader institutional participation.

Let's Get Building!

The U.S. must act decisively. We don't need more studies; we need to build, and we need to build now. So, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work. The future of AI depends on it, and honestly, who wants to be stuck with dial-up speeds in the age of light speed?
