The Almighty 1933 Penny: Worth Over £100,000

Jan 03, 2025 at 03:00 pm

It's always a good idea to have a declutter, particularly if you're sitting on a small fortune in rare coins at home.

The Almighty 1933 Penny: Worth Over £100,000

A TikTok user has revealed a rare 1933 penny that could be gathering dust in your home and is thought to be worth a staggering £100,000.

The coin enthusiast, who goes by the handle @CoinCollectingWizard and has amassed 215,000 followers on the platform, shared a video advising collectors not to clean their coins as it could devalue them.

In the clip, he begins by showing a 1933 penny that he says is valued at £100,000.

"The 1933 penny is probably the rarest penny out there with only seven known to exist," he explains.

"The coin you see here is actually a fake copy version of this super rare coin, these are known as pre-decimal pennies from the United Kingdom that are no longer in circulation. There are many dates to look out for."

But he adds that out of all the valuable coins, none quite match up to the "almighty 1933 penny worth over £100,000".

The 1933 George V penny is a collector's dream, with an enormous estimated value due to its rarity.

It's believed that only six or seven of these special coins were minted, making them exceedingly scarce.

These pennies were struck by the Royal Mint as pattern coins, not intended for public use but rather to be placed under the foundations of new buildings erected in 1933.

The Royal Mint reserved a select few of the 1933 pennies for institutions like the British Museum and the Royal Mint Museum.

These coins can be easily confused with others from the era due to their similar design.

Its obverse side bears the likeness of King George V, and on the reverse, Britannia is depicted wielding a trident and shield emblazoned with the Union Flag.

With counterfeits and replicas of the 1933 penny being quite prevalent, it's crucial to have them authenticated by a professional before any sale or purchase.

The TikTok video showcasing the coin has garnered over a hundred likes and numerous comments, with one user claiming: "I have that one," and another echoing the sentiment.

If you suspect you might have this rare coin, it's advisable to consult with an expert for an accurate valuation.
