How to Add TRON (TRX) to MetaMask? (It's Not Possible)
Jul 23, 2024 at 11:02 pm
When searching for wallets compatible with the Tron Network (TRC20), you will soon find that MetaMask is not a viable option. There’s a simple reason for it

People who are searching for wallets that are compatible with the Tron Network (TRC20) will quickly discover that MetaMask is not a viable option. This is because the Tron blockchain is not compatible with the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine).
Only EVM-compatible blockchains, such as Ethereum, Avalanche, Fantom and Polygon, are supported by the MetaMask wallet.
But don't worry - there are good alternatives available. We’re going to assume that if you were wondering how to add the TRC20 to MetaMask, you’ll probably be interested in wallets that do support Tron. In this article, we’ll explain why adding the Tron network to MetaMask can’t be done, and provide a list of the best Tron wallets that will do what MetaMask cannot.
Key highlights:
Why can’t I add Tron Network to MetaMask?
You can’t directly add Tron Network and its native coin TRON (TRX) to MetaMask because it operates on a distinct protocol that isn’t compatible with EVM blockchains.
MetaMask primarily supports Ethereum and other Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible networks, which makes it it impossible to directly integrate TRON. This incompatibility is due to the unique blockchain technology used by TRON, which differentiates it from EVM-based networks.
Even though you can manage bridged TRX tokens on networks like BNB Chain, this requires additional steps that aren’t as straight-forward. For now, MetaMask extensively supports Ethereum and its derivatives, which are not compatible with the TRON protocol.
There may be hope for future interoperability between MetaMask and TRON, but it relies on initiatives like MetaMask Snaps. As of now, it simply isn’t possible.
Due to these limitations, you’ll need to explore alternative wallets that can manage TRC20 tokens on the Tron network.
Will MetaMask ever support Tron?
It’s honestly hard to say. MetaMask might expand its support to TRON through dedicated wallet solutions or future interoperability enhancements like MetaMask Snaps.
While originally designed for Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, MetaMask Snaps are applications that add extra features and functionalities to MetaMask. With that said, they are developed by third-party developers, so it’s impossible to predict whether some of them will develop a MetaMask Snap that allows connection to non-Ethereum blockchains, such as Tron.
For now, if you’re searching for a wallet that supports Tron network, MemaMask is not the way to go. If a Tron Snap is developed, it could potentially enable direct interaction between MetaMask and Tron. There have been discussions and potential solutions, but there’s no official announcement on Tron support in MetaMask.
Best wallets for Tron users
So, MetaMask isn’t cutting it, for now at least. That means it’s time to compare some of the best alternatives for managing your TRC20 tokens on the Tron network.
1. Ledger Nano X
The Ledger Nano X is one of the best hardware wallets for Tron users. It offers robust security and seamless management of TRC20 tokens through its deterministic offline key storage. This wallet makes sure your digital assets are safely housed offline, protected from potential hacks and unauthorized access.
One of the outstanding features of the Ledger Nano X is its extensive support for multiple cryptocurrencies, including TRX and TRC20 tokens. This means you can manage all your digital assets in one place, easily track your tokens and make transactions safely.
The wallet also offers Bluetooth connectivity, which allows you to manage your assets through your mobile device while maintaining a secure connection. There are regular firmware updates that further enhance the wallet’s functionality and security.
With its user-friendly interface and compatibility with various wallet management applications, the Ledger Nano X streamlines your interaction with TRC20 tokens. If you want to put your TRC20 tokens in cold storage, Ledger Nano X is a great choice. You can learn more about the wallet in our Ledger Nano X review.
2. TronLink
TronLink is a robust software wallet that’s designed specifically for the TRON network. There’s a reason this wallet is trusted by over 10 million users worldwide - it’s reliable.
TronLink allows for local storage of private keys. This gives you enhanced security and complete control over your assets. Additionally, the wallet supports a wide range of functions, such as sending, receiving, and processing transactions for decentralized applications (dApps) on the TRON ecosystem.
A notable feature is the ability to back up your wallet using a mnemonic phrase, so that you have easy access and security even if your device is compromised. Unlike some other non-custodial wallets, TronLink prioritizes security and user-friendliness. This makes it a versatile option for users engaging with various digital assets on the TRON network.
