Everyone agrees the real-world utility of DePINs is what makes them so interesting, but it's also what makes them so difficult to build.

DePINs, or decentralized wireless networks, have captured the attention of the crypto community due to their potential to revolutionize industries such as telecom, energy, and mobility. Despite being around for several years, DePINs have recently experienced a surge in interest from both investors and founders.
As someone who has been covering DePINs for the past four years, I've had the opportunity to witness firsthand the evolution of the sector, the challenges faced by DePIN founders, and the role of various tools in accelerating the adoption of DePINs. In this article, I'll provide an overview of the essential tools that every DePIN founder needs to know about and how they contribute to the growth of the DePIN industry.
What Makes DePINs Unique?
Before delving into the specific tools, it's crucial to understand what distinguishes DePINs and why they require a specialized set of tools.
DePINs are fundamentally different from other crypto projects. While working in crypto generally demands a diverse skill set, DePINs present a whole new level of multidisciplinarity. In addition to the typical hardware aspects (design, manufacture, ship, sell) involved in any physical product, DePIN founders must establish businesses that can effectively compete with established Web2 players in massive industries such as telecom, energy, and mobility. They must also navigate the complexities of smart contracts, tokens, and decentralized applications (dapps).
This unique combination of hardware, business, and technology creates a steep learning curve for DePIN founders. However, several companies and investment firms have recognized this need and are building tools to lower the barrier to entry for DePIN founders and, ultimately, increase the pace of innovation in the industry.
Essential Tools for DePIN Founders: A Deep Dive
One of the most critical elements of any DePIN project is its map explorer. Every DePIN project needs an explorer that displays the number and location of their devices, their token price and trading volume, and their on-chain revenue, among other important metrics.
Historically, each DePIN had to create this explorer themselves, which entailed smart contract, backend, and frontend work and could take months. This inefficiency stemmed from the fact that this piece of the stack is largely the same across every DePIN project. Fortunately, several companies, including Hotspotty, EV3, IoTeX, and DePIN Pulse, are stepping in to simplify this process.
Hotspotty's DePIN Hub provides DePINs with a profile page that includes a high-level description of their project with an emphasis on social sentiment and community growth. It also features recent third-party media coverage on podcasts and information on token price and trading volume. Essentially, DePIN Hub helps founders tell the story of how they started and grew their projects.
EV3's DePIN.Ninja serves as the industry's default on-chain revenue tracker for DePINs. In addition to providing project profile pages that include links to their socials, recent podcast episodes, and total capital raised, DePIN.Ninja helps founders easily showcase their financial metrics to investors and the world.
IoTeX's DePINscan is the go-to-explorer for the DePIN space. It includes both sector-wide metrics like total market cap, trading volume, and devices as well as free project profile pages with the number and physical location of devices. It also includes miner-relevant metrics like device cost, earnings, and payback period. Put simply, DePINscan helps tell the story of what DePIN (and specific projects within it) have accomplished so far and provides a snapshot of the industry today.
Lastly, Unleash DePIN's DePIN Pulse isn't quite live yet, but it promises to provide DePIN projects with a place to highlight their miner earning opportunities as well as facilitating lead generation for supply-side contributors as well. In essence, DePIN Pulse helps founders directly communicate and capitalize on their value proposition with potential contributors.
These tools aggregate and publish data in a way that benefits the entire DePIN sector. They have significantly reduced the go-to-market time for DePIN founders and increased their discoverability across the sector and crypto more broadly.
The Road Ahead: Unlocking DePIN's Full Potential
DePINs represent one of crypto's best chances to positively impact the world. They introduce a novel method of capital formation and a new, more equitable way to build physical infrastructure. If any of these ideas work, the fabric of society will be changed forever.
While the sector has come a long way since the last cycle, there is still much work to be done. Commoditizing the map explorer part of the DePIN tech stack increases the pace and ease with which DePINs can be created because, after all, the more experimentation we can encourage here, the more innovation will undoubtedly occur. And that's something we can all agree is worth fighting for.
